Seven people were arrested after a wave of fights and mob violence erupted during the final night of the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis on Sunday.

What should have been a routine evening of rides and family entertainment descended into chaos near closing time.

Video from the fair showed a group of “youths” racing through the grounds while kicking and punching people in their path.

Women, children, and other fairgoers could be seen scrambling away as the unruly crowd surged through the area.

At least one police officer was punched in the face during the disorder, according to an officer who was at the scene.

A member of the fair security team was also injured, although officials did not release details about that person’s condition.

Witnesses told local outlet 12 News that multiple fights broke out late Sunday.

By 10 p.m., reporters observed numerous officers on horseback gathered near the north entrance and Spin City, the section of the fair containing the rides.

Police dispatch traffic captured just how quickly the situation was deteriorating.

“They need some help at Spin City. Send anybody extra you have,” one police officer could be heard saying.

The plea for reinforcements came as officers dealt with disturbances both inside and around the fairgrounds.

Officials also said some individuals attempted to enter the fair without authorization, adding another problem for police already trying to contain roving groups.

Wisconsin State Fair officials announced Monday afternoon that seven people had been arrested in connection with the incidents.

They said no serious injuries to fairgoers had been reported, despite the alarming scenes recorded during the mayhem.

In a statement, fair officials said, “Sunday evening, near the close of the annual State Fair, Wisconsin State Fair Park Police, with the support of the Milwaukee and West Allis Police Departments, responded to disturbances on and around Wisconsin State Fair Park. This included individuals attempting to gain unauthorized access to the Fair, as well as disturbances involving groups on the grounds. Law enforcement and security staff responded quickly as these incidents occurred.”

Officials also addressed early rumors that gunfire may have been involved. “No serious injuries to Fairgoers were reported.

Despite initial reports circulating Sunday evening, law enforcement has confirmed there were no gunshots associated with the incidents at the Wisconsin State Fair.”

The fair sought to distinguish the ugly final hours from the rest of the annual event.

“For 11 days, hundreds of thousands of guests came together for a safe and successful Wisconsin State Fair. The incidents Sunday evening were isolated to the final hours of the Fair and are not representative of the experience our guests enjoyed throughout the event.”

Officials made clear that the mob behavior would not be brushed aside as harmless teenage antics.

“The behavior is always unacceptable and is not what we expect or will tolerate at the Wisconsin State Fair Park.”

The statement detailed the considerable police presence that had already been assigned to the event.

“We had enhanced security and additional law enforcement resources in place throughout the Fair, including support from the Milwaukee and West Allis police departments, Milwaukee Police District 3, MPD Major Events Response Team, mounted and bicycle patrols, and drone coverage. Those resources allowed our security and public safety teams to respond quickly Sunday evening.”

Fair leaders said those plans will continue to be examined after the violence.

“We continually review our security plans with our law enforcement partners and look for ways to make the Fair even safer for our guests.”

Officials concluded by praising those who responded while reiterating their responsibility to protect the public.

“The safety of our Fairgoers, vendors, exhibitors and employees is always our highest priority. We are grateful to Wisconsin State Fair Park Police and all of our law enforcement partners for their response Sunday evening and their work throughout the Fair.”

The absence of reported gunfire and serious injuries does not make the footage any less disturbing.

Families attending a state fair should not have to flee a roaming pack of attackers while police officers and security personnel become targets themselves.

Mounted officers, local police, specialized response teams, bicycle patrols, and drone coverage provided authorities with substantial resources.

Even so, the final night offered another stark reminder that public order can collapse quickly when a mob decides ordinary rules no longer apply.

Seven arrests are a beginning, not a complete answer.

Authorities must identify everyone responsible, pursue appropriate charges, and make certain future visitors know the Wisconsin State Fair belongs to peaceful families, not thugs looking for victims.
