Donald Trump has felt strongly about basketball as of late. The President recently weighed in on one of the longest-lasting debates going on in sports circles: who the greatest basketball player of all time is. While it’s widely viewed as a two-horse race between Michael Jordan and LeBron James, Trump made it clear that for him, it’s a fairly easy choice.

“Well, Michael Jordan is a guy that’s a friend of mine. He’s a really good guy,” Trump said during a press conference following James’ decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th season in the NBA. “And I think LeBron… Maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”

The NBA isn’t the only basketball league the President has been following, either. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that the President has been following the controversy surrounding WNBA guard Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever, who sparked debate when she said in a profile that she thinks it’s important to keep transgender girls from competing in the same sports as other girls.

“I don’t believe he (President Trump) has reached out to her. I know he is following the story. As you know, this is something the president feels strongly about as well, and the American people do, too: that men should not be playing in women’s sports,” Leavitt said.

“It’s completely ludicrous that anyone could support that. It’s even more ludicrous you have Sophie Cunningham, a female athlete herself, very accomplished in her own right, coming forth and speaking that truth that men shouldn’t play in women’s sports — we want to protect women and girls — and the backlash she is receiving from Democrats and left-wing fingers across the country is astonishing. They are clearly very out of touch with the American public on this issue.”

Now, resurfaced comments from 2022 link Trump’s James-Jordan feelings and his take on trans athletes in the WNBA.

“I’d be the greatest women’s basketball coach in history because I don’t like LeBron James,” Trump said in a public address, “I like Michael Jordan much better. But I’d go up to LeBron James.

“I’d be the greatest women’s basketball coach in history. I don’t like LeBron James, I like Michael Jordan much better. But, I’d go up to LeBron James…I’d say, ‘LeBron, did you ever have any desire to be a woman? Because what I’d love you to do is star on my team.” pic.twitter.com/xU5lt6hPeH

“It doesn’t matter, I’d say, ‘LeBron, did you ever have any desire to be a woman? Because what I’d love you to do is star on my team that I’m building up.’ I will have the greatest team in history. They’ll never lose. Nobody will come within 70 points of this team. Now, we have to change that, and we have to make it okay to talk about it.”

It’s an odd thing to say considering that the WNBA doesn’t have a single transgender player in it, and no transgender athletes are dominating at the highest levels of college basketball either. The one transgender female basketball player that anti-trans advocates have used as an example recently, Julien Tetart, hasn’t even reached the highest level of professional basketball in France
