New Dyslipidemia Guidelines Lower the Lipid Treatment Goals and Raise the Bar for Clinical Practice

New dyslipidemia guidelines from multiple US medical organizations simultaneously lowered the goals for lipid levels in many US patients and raised the bar for clinicians to help those patients reach the new goals. Among the recommendations of the more than 100-page document are the use of a new risk assessment tool (the PREVENT [Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease EVENTs] score) and new lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) treatment targets, with levels as low as 70 mg/dL for most patients requiring primary prevention and as low as 55 mg/dL for most patients who are at high risk or require secondary prevention (to convert LDL-C to millimoles per liter, multiply by 0.0259). The new guidelines indicate that many people in the US should be candidates for lipid-lowering therapy (LLT), and many will be advised to reach new lower blood lipid concentrations.
