Love Island has sparked a 'race row' after Leanne Amaning was picked last on Sunday's opening episode.

Fans have pointed out that this is the fourth time an ethnic minority contestant has been chosen at the end during the coupling process.

On Sunday's episode, Leanne, 22, didn't step forward for any of the male Islanders until the final boy, Mike Boateng, 24, walked into the South African villa and the two coupled up.

During the coupling process, the girls step forward for any singleton that catches their eye while the boys can pick any Islander to couple up with, even if they don't step forward or are already partnered up.

On the 2019 series, Yewande Biala was picked last, while Samira Mighty and Malin Andersson were also chosen at the end during their 2018 and 2016 series, respectively.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their disapointment over the coupling process, complaining that it happens 'every year'.

Yet other fans have pointed out that Leanne didn't step forward for a male Islander until the end and she could have been picked earlier if she had shown interest to the other boys.

MailOnline contacted ITV2 for comment, who said: 'Love Island refutes any suggestion of racism in the strongest possible terms.'

One person said: 'Year after year we have to watch the black woman be picked last and struggle to find someone. We had it with Samira, We had it with Yewande, Please, dear God, don't let it happen to Leanne. I am so tired of it. #LoveIsland.'

A different user put: 'Of course Leanne was the last to be picked happens every year, Yewande last year, Samira the year before that it's ridiculous #LoveIsland.'

Another show watcher commented: 'Leanne is getting picked last as per and I'd love to be outraged but we knew this was coming #LoveIsland.'

While a different account added: 'Hmmm Leanne picked last. I see a pattern forming again on this show. #LoveIsland.'

However, another viewer tweeted: 'Maybe she would have been if she had stepped forward? I wouldn't pick someone who didn't step forward for me either. I'm pretty sure Yewande didn't step forward either? Looks like Leanne got the best pick out of the guys anyway.'

A different account claimed: 'People commenting on Leanne being picked last but she never exactly stepped forward for anyone either #LoveIsland.'

While another fan added: 'Everyone saying Leanne picked last because she's black, she hasn't stepped forward for anyone so what do you expect #LoveIsland.'

Axed 2019 contestant, Sherif Lanre, who was kicked out the villa after an alleged inappropriate incident with Molly-Mae, in which he is said to have accidentally kicked her in the groin and used a vulgar term in front of her, also spoke out.

The former rugby player, who didn't have a girl step forward for him on the 2019 series, told The Sun: 'I don't agree with picking someone solely based on race. It's pretty evident that something must be going on.'

He added: 'When Leanne wasn't picked there were a couple of things running through my head. Is this the typical reality TV where we've seen the black girls get picked last?'

While former contestant Marcel Somerville, who was also picked last on his 2017 series, spoke out about Love Island and demanded that the show overhaul its format over the summer.

Speaking during the summer 2019 series, the Blazin' Squad star, 34, told The Sun: 'The one thing that lets the show down is when they're doing their casting they don't take into consideration people's tastes.'

He added: 'As a person of ethnic background you do feel "Is it because I'm black?" You do have that go through your head.

'I'm not different from anyone else, I'm a human, I go to the gym, I have a good body. The only difference between you and that person is the colour of your skin.'

Marcel added that the casting process needs to change and people need to be matched in terms of their types.
