Google has introduced native end-to-end encryption (E2EE) support in the Gmail mobile app for both Android and iOS, expanding a feature that was previously limited to the desktop version. This update allows enterprise users to send and read encrypted emails directly within the Gmail app, eliminating the need for third-party tools or external platforms to secure communications.

With this implementation, encryption is fully integrated into the app experience. Users can compose, send, and access protected messages without relying on additional software or complex workflows. This simplifies the process significantly, especially for organizations that require secure communication but want to avoid friction caused by external encryption portals.

The feature is based on client-side encryption (CSE), meaning that encryption and decryption occur on the user’s device rather than on Google’s servers. As a result, only the sender and the intended recipient can access the content of the messages. This ensures a higher level of privacy and data protection, aligning with stricter corporate security requirements.

Composing an E2EE message in Gmail/Recipient without the Gmail app reading in the browser

Another important aspect is its broad compatibility. Encrypted emails can be sent to recipients using any email provider. If the recipient is not using Gmail or part of the Google ecosystem, they can still securely access the message through a protected web interface. This maintains usability while preserving the integrity of encrypted communication across platforms.

Despite the broader availability on mobile devices, the feature is currently focused on enterprise customers. Specifically, it is limited to users with Google Workspace Enterprise Plus subscriptions. Additionally, administrators must enable and configure the feature before it can be used within an organization.

Overall, this update represents a significant step in making secure email communication more accessible and streamlined on mobile devices, particularly for businesses that prioritize confidentiality and data protection in their daily operations.
