Congress is stepping in after a viral video showed Amazon's Alexa smart speaker giving users reasons to vote for Kamala Harris and not any for Donald Trump

The viral video prompted widespread criticism from figures on the right who called the device's apparent preferences 'election interference.'

An Amazon spokesperson said Alexa's glowing reviews of Harris were an 'error' that the company 'fixed quickly,' but that has not satisfied Republican lawmakers, especially one that is now charging that the company meddling with the election.

'The purpose of this letter is to put you on notice that I will not allow this to go unaddressed, and expect a prompt reply as to what happened here and what corrective actions will be taken in the future,' Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wrote to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Thursday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wrote a letter to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warning him that the country needs answers about why the company's Alexa smart speaker is 'interfering in the election in favor of one political candidate'

'This was a giant step backwards on so many fronts. There must be answers about what happened here and I expect them soon.'

Graham noted how many conservatives already hold beliefs that large tech companies, like Amazon, Google and others, which predominantly lean left, influence their corporations and products to be anti-Trump

'There's a widespread belief among conservatives that companies like yours have a distinct bias in favor of liberal causes,' Graham writes.

'The reported shocking interaction between Alexa and users asking for information about why to vote for President Trump versus why to vote for Vice President Harris is, in many conservatives' minds, exhibit A of the problem.'

And it's not just that the Alexa products give positive feedback on Harris, he says, but that the Amazon device refuses to address Trump or talk about his record.

A video shared by the popular LibsofTikTok account shows an Amazon Alexa device saying 'there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris' despite saying it could not 'provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate' when asked about reasons to vote for Trump

'Specifically, it appears your Alexa technology will answer user questions about why to vote for Vice President Harris in detail.'

'At the same time, it refuses to answer similar questions about why to vote for President Trump, stating that it 'cannot promote content that supports a certain political party or a specific politician.''

Then he warned Jassy about the consequences of the apparent bias.

'These radically different responses suggest that Amazon technology is interfering in the election in favor of one political candidate,' Graham said.

In a series of videos posted to X on Tuesday, Alexa users are seen asking why they should vote for Trump.

Each time, the AI device replied: 'I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate.'

But when users would ask the same question about Harris, it would provide an array of answers supporting the vice president.

Many online called the responses 'election interference'

'While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a female of color with a comprehensive plan to address racial injustice and inequality throughout the country,' the device could be heard saying in one video shared by the popular LibsofTikTok account.

Another video shows the device giving similar reasons to vote for the vice president.

'Because you believe in her policies and her vision for the country, because you trust her experience and her leadership skills, because you want to continue moving forward as a nation and make progress on issues that matter to you like health care, education, equality and justice,' it says.

But a spokesperson for the Jeff Bezos-owned company told Variety, 'This was an error that was quickly fixed.'

A spokesperson for the Jeff Bezos-owned company said the issue has since been resolved

The spokesperson added that Amazon 'makes continual changes to improve the systems it has in place for detecting and blocking content that violates its policies.'

A spokesperson also claimed to Fox Business that Alexa does not have any political opinions.

Now when users ask Alexa about voting for Harris, it says: 'I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or specific candidate.'
