As the 2026 hurricane season gets underway, U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Tampa, is noting local governments in Florida have been reimbursed $1.5 billion from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for hurricanes and other disasters from the past several years.
Moody told the News Service of Florida the money will help pay for more than 500 projects across the state, including hurricane debris removal, power restoration, wastewater plant repairs, and beach dune and seawall projects.
“For smaller cities and smaller counties that are strapped, in terms of resources, making sure that these funds are given to them through FEMA in an efficient and timely manner, is so very important,” Moody said.
According to Moody’s office, the reimbursed projects include:
Sarasota County received $17.2 million for debris removal
Tallahassee received $6.6 million for debris removal
Dunedin got $2.2 million for a marina seawall project
Brevard County was repaid $4.1 million for dune engineering
Madeira Beach received $617,987 for parking lot repairs
From a power plan to knowing evacuation zones, NBC6’s First Alert Weather team explains how to stay safe during the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
