The search for a new Lord Voldemort has become one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the next era of Harry Potter. Ralph Fiennes’ version of the Dark Lord remains one of the defining performances of the original film series, and with HBO now rebuilding the Wizarding World for television, fans have been waiting to see who will inherit the role next. That reveal has not come from the live-action reboot yet — but the franchise has now confirmed a new Voldemort for another upcoming Harry Potter project.

Daniel Brühl will voice Lord Voldemort in the German-language edition of Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, marking one of the first major new Voldemort castings of the post-Warner Bros. film era. The announcement comes from Pottermore Publishing and Audible, whose expanding full-cast audiobook project is turning the original books into large-scale audio productions for new audiences. For Brühl, the role adds another major franchise villain to his résumé. The actor is widely recognized for playing Helmut Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: Civil War before returning in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Voldemort is a very different kind of antagonist, but the casting still creates an immediate connection for genre fans. The German-language edition of Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions will launch on November 10, 2026, with Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen, the German title for the first book in the series, which U.S. readers know as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The remaining books will follow monthly, with Pottermore Publishing saying the production features more than 150 German voice actors and has already involved over 2,000 hours of recording. Brühl is not the only major name in the German cast.

Per Potter Publishing, the new German editions “will be brought to life by more than 150 German voice actors.” Abak Safaei-Rad will narrate the series, while Nina Hoss takes on Professor McGonagall, Armin Rohde voices Rubeus Hagrid, Falilou Seck plays Albus Dumbledore, Robert Stadlober voices Professor Snape, and Matthias Matschke appears as Professor Quirrell. The young Hogwarts characters are being treated differently from the adult roles. For the first three books, Harry, Hermione, and Ron will be voiced by Niklas Ulonska, Ayla Uluçam, and Anton Schnermann. Moritz Frickel will voice young Draco Malfoy, Eliot Neudeck will voice young Neville Longbottom, and Ella Reithmeier will voice young Ginny Weasley.

The plan mirrors the English full-cast editions by using different performers for the central trio across the seven-book run, allowing the audio series to age with the story. The new editions are being positioned as immersive audio adaptations, with ensemble performances and Dolby Atmos sound design.

Meanwhile, HBO’s Dark Lord is still waiting in the shadows. That has not stopped the rumor mill from trying to summon him early. Cillian Murphy’s name has been the loudest one linked to the role, while Paul Bettany and Tilda Swinton have also surfaced in speculation around HBO’s Voldemort. Unfortunately for fans hoping to see Murphy take the wand, he has already poured cold water on the idea.
