“Schulradeln Baden-Württemberg” is all about having fun while staying active—and doing something good for health, the environment, and the community. For three weeks, children and teenagers get on their bikes and aim to cycle as many kilometers as possible. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is actively supporting this year’s campaign and offering an additional incentive for high schools in Karlsruhe: the school with the highest number of kilometers per student will be rewarded with a special visit from an ice cream truck.

Schools in Baden-Württemberg can take part in the nationwide “Schulradeln” competition between May 1 and September 30, 2026. In Karlsruhe, the campaign starts on June 28, in parallel with the “STADTRADELN” contest. The aim is for children and teenagers to make as many everyday trips as possible by bicycle—whether commuting to school, heading to leisure activities, or visiting friends. This year, the local “Schulradeln” campaign in Karlsruhe features a special incentive for schools with upper secondary levels: KIT will provide an ice cream truck for one day to the school that achieves the highest number of kilometers cycled per student.

“Through ‘Schulradeln,’ students discover the joy of physical activity and experience how sustainable mobility can work in everyday life,” says Professor Kora Kristof, Vice President for Digitalization and Sustainability at KIT. “Above all, the campaign highlights that many small decisions can make a big difference—for the climate, the environment, and the quality of life in our cities.”

Statewide Campaign with High Participation

The “Schulradeln Baden-Württemberg” initiative is organized by MOVERS – Aktiv zur Schule, a program run by the State of Baden-Württemberg to promote safe and sustainable school travel. This year, more than 1,350 schools and over 42,000 participants have already registered. The two primary schools and two secondary schools in Baden-Württemberg with the most kilometers cycled will receive awards from MOVERS. Prizes include the “Schulradeln” challenge cup, a campaign day, and playground equipment worth up to 2,000 euros. Schools can still register throughout the entire campaign period.
