Johnny Depp could once again be sailing the high seas in a new instalment of Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased the comeback of Captain Jack Sparrow while attending the studio's D23 fan event.

'We're talking with Johnny, we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,' Bruckheimer, 82, told Deadline on Sunday.

The sixth movie in the series looks set to revolve around a new character played by Margot Robbie but execs are clearly hoping Depp as Sparrow will have a part to play as well.

If it happens, it will be the first Pirates of the Caribbean film since Dead Men Tell No Tales arrived in theaters in 2017.

Representatives for Bruckheimer declined to comment to The Daily Mail on the report.

The Daily Mail has also reached out to representatives for Depp and Walt Disney Pictures for further comment on the story.

Bruckheimer last year told The Wrap that Robbie was 'still involved' in a potential sixth film, as screenwriter Ted Elliott had been penning a script for the motion picture.

'He worked on it, and we’ve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks,' he said. 'We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out and we kind of went with the other one.'

Depp began playing the trademark role in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which co-starred Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush, with Gore Verbinski directing. 

The film made more than $654 million in worldwide box office.

Next up in the Disney franchise was 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which garnered more than $1.06 billion in worldwide box office revenues.

The 2007 motion picture Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was another commercial success, raking in $960 million in worldwide totals.

Four years later, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which featured Penélope Cruz and Ian McShane opposite Depp, racked up worldwide box office revenues of more than $1.04 billion.

In all, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has amassed more than $4.5 billion over its first five films.

After years of scandal following his acrimonious parting with Amber Heard, it looked as if Depp was distanced from the franchise.

Screenwriter Stuart Beattie told the Daily Mail in October of 2018 that it appeared at the time that Depp would be wrapping up what he described as 'a great run' in the signature role.

Beattie said: 'Obviously, he's made that character his own and it's become the character he's most famous for now.

'And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it's been great for him, it's been great for us, so I'm just very, very happy about it.'

He added: 'I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It's the only character he's played five times.'
