Dr. Anthony Fauci is accused of lying under oath about his knowledge of dangerous virus research in China. Senator Rand Paul called for an investigation into Fauci's possible perjury. Newly released emails suggest Fauci was aware of gain-of-function research in Wuhan, although he denied funding it. The Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University did receive NIH funding, according to the Government Accountability Office. Perjury carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years. 

On July 13, 2023, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released Dr. Fauci's emails about a conference call on Covid origins. In the emails, Fauci acknowledges concerns about Covid being genetically engineered and gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Gain-of-function research alters viruses to increase their virulence. Despite Fauci's denial, the NIH funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, according to Senator Rand Paul. 

Senator Paul cited a paper by WIV scientists discussing gain-of-function research funded by the NIH. Fauci denied it was gain-of-function, but his emails contradicted this. Dr. Shi Zhengli, known as the 'bat lady,' denies involvement in Covid's origins. Dr. Shi Zhengli, a prominent virologist at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, has been researching bat coronaviruses and denies any involvement in Covid's origins. She completed her education at Wuhan University and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. 

Last month, the GAO confirmed that the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University received NIH funding for virus research, as mentioned in Sen Paul's letter. The GAO report highlighted genetic experiments involving bat coronaviruses and hybridized strains. The NIH's oversight of these experiments was found to be ineffective. The origins of the virus are still uncertain, causing a divide among officials. DailyMail.com has contacted Fauci for comment.
