The spotted hyena's proportionally large heart fits an endurance-hunting body, while the lion is built to shorten a chase. The comparison also exposes the scavenger myth.
Put a lion and a spotted hyena beside each other and nobody needs help deciding which animal looks regal. The lion has the mane, the posture and several thousand years of flattering publicity. The hyena has a sloping back, untidy fur and a laugh that cinema usually assigns to villains.
Inside the chest, however, the hierarchy turns upside down.
Reference figures commonly put a lion’s heart at about 0.45 to 0.57 per cent of body mass, while a spotted hyena’s approaches one per cent. Kilogram for kilogram, the hyena devotes roughly twice as much of itself to the pump that keeps oxygenated blood moving.
That comparison needs two guardrails. It is proportional, so it does not mean every hyena has a physically heavier heart than every lion. Lions are generally much larger. The percentages are also approximate zoological benchmarks, not constants stamped into each animal. Sex, age, body condition and measurement method all create variation.
The contrast is still biologically meaningful because it matches two very different ways of catching dinner.
A lion tries to make the chase shortLions are ambush predators. They use darkness, vegetation and cooperation to get close, then attack with acceleration, muscle and body mass. A chase that lasts too long is often a chase that has already failed.
Calling that poor stamina undersells the design. The lion’s job is not to win a marathon. It is to turn a quiet approach into a violent few seconds, catch a prey animal that may be faster in open ground, pull it off balance and hold it. Power that can subdue a zebra or wildebeest comes with metabolic costs, and an explosive attack quickly produces heat and fatigue.
A comparative review of mammalian hearts found that felids, from domestic cats to wild species, averaged about 0.46 per cent of body mass in its sample. That was around a quarter below the general mammalian prediction. The same review explains the wider pattern: stalk-and-pounce cats tend to have lower aerobic scope than pursuit-oriented canids, whose work depends on sustained oxygen delivery.

The hyena’s strategy begins where the sprint endsSpotted hyenas can accelerate and run fast, but their defining advantage is that they keep travelling. The modern scientific account of the species lists a slow lope near 10 kilometres per hour, a faster lope around 13 to 16 kilometres per hour and running speeds of at least 50 kilometres per hour. In the Serengeti, individuals may travel as far as 40 kilometres from their home ranges when migratory prey are elsewhere.
When they hunt, hyenas can prolong the test. Rather than relying entirely on surprise, they pursue and watch for an animal that is young, injured, isolated or simply beginning to tire. Tactics change with the prey. One or two hyenas may handle smaller animals, while groups cooperate against wildebeest, zebra or buffalo calves.
The Ngorongoro Hyena Project, whose researchers have followed spotted hyenas for decades, describes them plainly as endurance hunters. It also points to another useful adaptation: a long muzzle rich in blood vessels exposed to incoming air, helping the animal shed heat during and after hard exertion.
A large proportional heart belongs inside that package. More cardiac muscle can support a larger stroke volume, meaning more blood moved per beat. More blood flow can deliver more oxygen to working muscles and carry heat away. But the heart is one part of a chain that also includes lungs, blood, capillaries, muscle fibres, mitochondria, limbs and cooling.
There is no single “endurance organ.” The hyena keeps going because its body works as a system.
The awkward truth about the supposed scavengerSpotted hyenas absolutely scavenge. They are exceptionally equipped for it. Their jaws crack bones, their teeth shear tough material and their digestive system recovers nutrients from remains that many other carnivores cannot use.
The mistake is turning “can scavenge” into “mostly waits for lions.” Field results vary by place, prey and season, but a review of free-living hyenas reports that 65 to 95 per cent of the spotted hyena’s diet can come from prey it kills. Other scientific summaries cite figures up to 80 per cent. In some ecosystems scavenged food matters more, but there is no honest way to describe the species as merely a clean-up crew.
The myth probably persists because scavenging is visible and hunting is easy to miss. A tourist arriving at a carcass sees hyenas beside lions and may assume the lions made the kill. The scene does not preserve a receipt. The hyenas may have killed it, the lions may have killed it, either species may have taken it from the other, or both may have arrived after something else happened.
Long-term observations have even documented lions appropriating a significant share of hyena kills. The insult “scavenger” becomes difficult to use consistently once the animal wearing a mane does the stealing.
A carcass has no moral ownerLions and hyenas overlap heavily in prey and compete directly for food. Lions are larger and more dangerous in a close confrontation, particularly when adult males are present. Hyenas compensate partly with numbers and cooperation.
A 27-year study of lion-hyena encounters in Kenya found that the two species interacted most often around fresh kills. Cooperative mobbing sometimes improved the hyenas’ chance of feeding from a carcass controlled by lions. Male lions sharply reduced that chance. For a hyena, deciding whether ten allies are enough to challenge a lion is not cowardice or bravery. It is risk calculation with teeth.
Humans tend to turn these encounters into courtroom dramas. One animal is the rightful hunter, the other a thief. Evolution has no such rule. Meat obtained by ambush, pursuit, theft or timely discovery contains the same calories. A predator that ignores safe food because another species killed it would be principled for exactly as long as it remained alive.
Both species hunt. Both species scavenge. Both take food when circumstances allow it.
Twice the percentage does not mean twice the athleteThe one-per-cent figure is memorable, perhaps too memorable. It invites a simple equation: bigger relative heart equals twice the endurance. Physiology does not scale so politely.
Heart mass offers clues about the capacity to deliver oxygen, but researchers do not determine an animal’s stamina by weighing one organ. The size and architecture of the lungs matter. So do haemoglobin concentration, total blood volume, muscle capillary density, cellular energy production, limb mechanics, fur, temperature and pace. Training and life history can alter the cardiovascular system within a species, just as human endurance athletes often develop larger hearts than sedentary people.
The values themselves are population summaries assembled from anatomical observations, not the result of a controlled race in which matched lions and hyenas ran until exhaustion. “Close to one per cent” should stay close to one per cent, rather than being polished into false precision.
Nor does the lion lose an evolutionary contest by having a smaller relative heart. Its muscular forequarters, retractile claws, flexible spine and social hunting can end a chase before an endurance specialist has time to exploit its advantage. The lion reduces the need for distance. The hyena prepares for distance when surprise fails.
There is no king of an ecosystemThe heart comparison stays with us because it reverses a cultural ranking. The animal cast as furtive, comic and cowardly carries proportionally more cardiac muscle than the animal used as a symbol of courage.
But replacing one crude hierarchy with another would miss the more interesting lesson. A hyena is not a better lion. A lion is not a failed endurance hunter. They are different predators spending their biological budgets in different ways.
The lion invests heavily in getting close and ending an encounter quickly. The spotted hyena invests in an economical gait, cooling, cooperation and the ability to keep applying pressure after the first burst is over. Its large proportional heart is not a secret superpower hiding beneath an unimpressive exterior. It is one visible part of a body shaped around persistence.
So the lion can keep the title humans gave it. Nature never issued crowns. On open ground, after the sprint has faded and the chase is still moving, the supposedly lesser animal may be the one whose anatomy tells the truer story.
