78-year-old woman dies after being hit by car in Stamford

An elderly woman has died after being struck by a car in Stamford on Friday morning.
Carmen Illapa, 78, was crossing Progress Drive near Stillwater Avenue around 5:30 a.m. when she was struck by a 2022 Ford Escape driven by a 28-year-old Stamford resident, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and spoke with responding officers, police said.
Illapa was taken to Stamford Hospital in an ambulance, where she was found to have life-threatening injuries. She later died, according to police.
The Stamford Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad at 203-977-4712 or the Stamford Police Dispatch Center at 203-977-4444.
The crash remains under investigation.
