Thank you for following along

Thank you for following along with today's race with Mail Sport. There was a lot of buzz around a Hamilton and Verstappen front row - and in the end, it all came down to that corner. The Dutch driver had the advantage, and the seven-time champion was sent down the field.

There was a lot of change in the pack with the pit stop strategies, but in the end, a great day for Red Bull, as they write their name into the history books.

Keep an eye across Mail Sport for the latest reaction from the Hungaroring, and build-up to Belgium next weekend. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Goodbye.

Jonathan McEvoy's race report

Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy was in Budapest, reporting back from today's race. It was a sticky start for Lewis Hamilton, and it cost the seven-time champion in the end, while Red Bull continue to set new records.

You can read what McEvoy thought about proceedings here.

Red Bull's 250th podium

As well as that 12 wins in a row, starting with the last race of 2022, they have also secured their 250th podium in their history.

They'll keep racking them up if no one else matches their current performance.

15:44

Hungarian Grand Prix top ten

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Lando Norris (McLaren)
3. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
5. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
6. George Russell (Mercedes)
7. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
8. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
9. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
10. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)

Russell overtakes Leclerc in sixth with that five-second penalty

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:42

Perez third in his Red Bull

Mclaren.png

15:42

Lando Norris gets back-to-back podiums

He's second.

15:41

MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Seven in a row for Max, 12 in a row for Red Bull. It's a new record!

Comfortable day for Red Bull.. final lap.

60x60_yellow_flag-1.png

15:40

Yellow flag briefly installed - and withdrawn

Sargeant was in trouble, and yellow flags were raised - but nothing bigger, and it quickly went back racing again.

He's pitting, it's the final lap. Sargeant's been retired.

Mercedes.png Ferrari.png

15:38

George Russell 3.7 seconds behind Leclerc

That gap is equal to an overtake, with Leclerc's five second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Hamilton three seconds behind Perez

Three laps to go.

Mercedes.png Ferrari.png

15:35

George Russell is up into seventh place

The British driver made that look easy - and the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz is left in the dust of Russell's Mercedes.

Russell said he wanted to box just a moment ago... clearly mind games from George going on there! Is he going to get Leclerc too??

Russell's pace picks up

And he's on the tail of Carlos Sainz.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:32

Perez leading the driver of the day standings at the moment

Less than ten laps remaining in Hungary

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mclaren.png

15:27

Perez catching up to Norris

Norris is also facing the problem of trying to overtake a number of backmarkers who are on the course, which may just give Perez more opportunity to seize second place.

Ferrari.png

15:24

Charles Leclerc's five second penalty would...

cost him nothing at the present time, as he's five seconds clear of his Ferrari teammate in seventh place.

Mercedes.png Mclaren.png

15:24

Hamilton takes Piastri's fourth place

The British driver uses his experience, and DRS, to take over Piastri.

Hamilton about 11 seconds behind Perez, but stranger things have happened in F1...

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:19

Fastest lap goes to... Max Verstappen

I'm not sure Red Bull need more points at this stage of the constructors championship, but it just shows the sheer power of the car as they look set to make it 12 wins on the bounce.

60x60_hungary.png

15:17

Here's how the pack got shaken up there

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Lando Norris (McLaren)
3. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
4. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
5. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
6. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
7. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
8. George Russell (Mercedes)
9. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
10. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:15

Verstappen comes into the pits

His stop time is 2.6 seconds - and he's back out in front.

If Red Bull wins this race, it's 12 straight wins for a single constructor - that's never happened before in F1.

Mercedes.png

15:14

Hamilton pitted - and drops to fifth place

Perez took fourth from Piastri - and it's clean

Perez worked his way past Piastri. The officials were looking at it initially - but they've since decided it's good clean racing fun, and it's all systems go as Perez fights his way into the podium places.

Ferrari.png

15:11

Charles Leclerc has a five second penalty for speeding in the pit lane

Leclerc currently running in sixth place.

Mercedes.png

15:10

Russell pits and comes back out in eighth place

Mercedes.png

15:10

Hamilton team radio

Hamilton's team telling him they'll 'pick the pace up'.

The seven-time champion responds: 'This is as fast as it goes, mate'.

Lap 47 order

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
4. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
5. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
6. George Russell (Mercedes)
7. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
8. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
9. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
10. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:06

Perez sets a new fastest lap

He's up to fifth now after the pit stops in front of him.

Mclaren.png

15:06

Norris comes in to pit, and comes out in third after a 2.2 second tyre swap

Alonso comes in to pit, and comes out ahead of his teammate Stroll

The Aston Martins are ninth and tenth respectively.

Ferrari.png

15:05

Leclerc comes into the pit

His stop time is 2.2 seconds.

Piastri comes in to pit, Perez comes in too...

Piastri was quick, 1.9 seconds - but it's also beneficial for Perez too. They're running sixth and seventh respectively.

Hamilton pushes Perez wide, and the Red Bull has to pull out of the takeover manoeuvre.

It's not that straightforward for Perez

He's getting close - but not quite close enough. He's trying to get at the Brit driver and utilise DRS to his advantage - but something's not quite getting all the way there.

Perez running between half a second and a whole second behind Hamilton.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:59

Perez is just half a second behind Hamilton now

Mercedes.png

14:58

George Russell has the fastest lap now

After a challenging Saturday, it's a beautiful Sunday for the British driver - he's the fastest around this course, and he's back into the points for the second time today.

Perez is rapidly catching up to Hamilton

Perez is fifth, but he could comfortably make the podium at this rate... unless Hamilton can hold him off??

The team engineer told him the exact same thing: 'Gap is seven seconds. Podium's on.'

George Russell up to 9th, Stroll down to 14th

The British driver made a smart pass over Bottas - while Stroll pitted again, keeping the Alfa Romeo in 10th, and Russell in 9th.

60x60_hungary.png

14:51

How they shape up in the points at the halfway stage

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Lando Norris (McLaren)
3. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
5. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
6. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
7. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
8. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
9. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
10. Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo)

A few drivers having lap times deleted for exceeding track limits

Something to keep an eye on - three times a driver does that, and they get a warning. For the fourth, that comes with a penalty.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:46

Radio message to Perez: 'Just reel him in'

Next on the fishing line... Lewis Hamilton, and fourth.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:45

Perez has the fastest lap

You would too if you were overtaking your opponents with ease.

Mercedes.png

14:45

George Russell pits

The British driver trades out his hard tyres for a medium set. It's sent him right back down the grid - but he did an astonishing job to get through the pack before. Will we see it again?

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:44

Perez takes George Russell too

George Russell held out as long as he possibly could - but Perez is just able to take it, by forcing the Brit driver to pull out of the fight, or cause an incident.

Still, Russell is up a staggering 12 places from his grid position just 40 minutes ago.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

14:41

Perez fights hard to overtake Sainz

It looked like it would be a tussle for sixth place - but Perez just obliterated it, and moved himself up the pack.

Everyone is on hard tyres now except for Perez

Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:38

Perez comes into pit

He has a 2.8 second tyre change, but it has pushed him down the pack, and he's come into the race in seventh place, sandwiched between the two Ferraris.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:36

Max Verstappen comes into the pit

Red Bull's team makes a solid stop, 2.3 seconds to change his tyres to a hard set, and comes back out in the lead.

60x60_hungary.png

14:35

Lap 23 of the Hungarian Grand Prix

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
4. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
5. George Russell (Mercedes)
6. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
7. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
8. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
9. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
10. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)

Alonso finally comes in to the pits

He comes out in 11th place. He managed the medium tyres wonderfully - but it will be a battle to get through the grid from here.

Mclaren.png

14:32

Lando Norris takes the fastest lap

Lando Norris, running in fourth place, has taken the fastest lap.

Everyone has one stop except four souls

Verstappen (#1), Perez (#2), Alonso (#3) and Russell (#6) are the only drivers who haven't pitted yet.

Russell started on hard tyres, and it's paid off magnificently.

Mclaren.png

14:29

Piastri comes in, 2.0 seconds pit stop

But he comes out just behind Lando Norris - Norris fourth, Piastri fifth.

Mclaren.png

14:28

Norris comes into the pit

He comes in just ahead of Russell and Hamilton, who are sixth and seventh respectively.

Mercedes.png

14:27

Lewis Hamilton comes into the pits

Ferrari.png

14:26

Carlos Sainz pitted

Carlos Sainz was the hardy soul on soft tyres... but he's gone into the pit lane, and come back out with a hard set.

He's currently in 10th place with Hulkenberg also going into the pits.

Zhou Guanyu has the fastest lap

Definite correlation that those changing to hard tyres are getting fanastic speed around the Hungaroring.

60x60_hungary.png

14:23

Top 10 on lap 15 in Hungary

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
6. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
7. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
8. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
9. Nico Hulkenberg (Haas)
10. George Russell (Mercedes)

Mercedes.png

14:22

George Russell moves into the top 10

After his poor qualifying session yesterday, George Russell has fought his way from 18th place into the points.

Valtteri Bottas takes fastest lap

Bottas takes the fastest lap after pitting and taking on new hard tyres.

Others in the pack will see that and almost certainly act accordingly...

Bottas is in 15th place.

Alfa_romeo.png

14:18

Zhou Guanyu has gone into the pit

It's pulled him down to last place in the race.

Mercedes.png

14:18

Hamilton apologises to his teammates

On the team radio, Hamilton said 'Sorry about that, guys.'

His Mercedes buddies don't seem all that concerned though, responding: 'Don't sweat it, Lewis. It's going to be a long, hot race.'

Alfa_romeo.png

14:15

Zhou Guanyu has a five second penalty

His day goes from bad to worse - he started fifth, a new record for him, but he's down to 15th...

Perez takes over Alonso for seventh place.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:13

Fastest lap... Max Verstappen

Is anyone surprised by that?

This is how the field shook up after that opening

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
6. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
7. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
8. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)
9. Nico Hulkenberg (Haas)
10. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)

There wasn't much they could do about it... but yeah, it was not pretty. It didn't hold up the race though - both Alpines out, and Ricciardo down to 18th and last after being caught up in that.

Esteban Ocon also withdraws from the race

It's been a double retirement for Alpine yet again by the looks of it...

Both Alpines hit into each other on the first corner.

Pierre Gasly pulls into the pit

There's a lot of damage to the back of his car - and I think it's all over for him.

Max Verstappen did have the better line into that opening corner, and he's made Hamilton pay for that.

Max Verstappen leads after the first lap, Piastri second, and Norris third. Hamilton has dropped from pole to fourth.

It looks like the yellow flag has been rescinded

Verstappen leads, Hamilton down to fourth

LIGHTS OUT AND AWAY WE GO

They're pulling back in to shape the grid for the Hungarian Grand Prix

Hamilton won this race in 2020, Ocon in 2021, Verstappen in 2022.

Imagine you'd get good money for Ocon in 2023... is it between the other two?

Formation lap underway

Hamilton leads the 20 cars on their warm-up lap around the Hungaroring.

Hamilton? Verstappen? Will McLaren capitalise on the drama between those two champions?

Teams doing the last work, removing the tyre covers.

Mercedes.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

13:57

Hamilton on pole, Verstappen second

The last time these two made up the front row of the grid? Abu Dhabi 2021. We'll never be allowed to forget what happened then...

13:56

Other storylines to keep an eye out for..

Zhou Guanyu starts in a career-best fifth place on the grid - can he build on that, or even improve?

Daniel Ricciardo is back in F1 - can he make it into the points? He starts 13th.

What about George Russell? 18th place - surely he will only go up from there?

Teams will be working on their final touches before the formation lap. What's the pit stop strategy? What tyres are best for one of the hottest days in the Hungarian calendar? We'll have answers for these very shortly.

60x60_hungary.png

13:49

They've just played the Hungarian national anthem

Excitement is building at the Hungaroring. We're not far away from the Hamilton versus Verstappen opening corner..

13:41

F1 constructor standings

Red Bull naturally lead the constructor table, with 10 wins from 10. 411 points puts them 208 clear of their nearest rivals, Mercedes, on 203, with Aston Martin third on 181.

With Alpha Tauri switching out Nyck De Vries for Daniel Ricciardo, will that aid their tally? They have just two points so far this season, earned by Yuki Tsunoda.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

13:38

F1 driver standings

Going into today's race, Max Verstappen is top of the driver's championship, with 255 points, 99 clear of his closest rival, Perez. Alonso (137) and Hamilton (121) are the only other drivers to have claimed over 100 points this season, with Sainz (83) rounding out the top five, a singe point clear of Russell.

How much will the chasing pack change after the points are dished out today?

Lewis Hamilton aiming for history...

Lewis Hamilton has eight wins in Hungary - it's equal for the most number of times a single driver has taken a GP victory. If he wants to stand alone in this regard - moving ahead of himself, and the legend that is Michael Schumacher - he can do it by claiming the chequered flag today.

If only it was that simple, right?

The full order of cars on the grid

2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)

3. Lando Norris (McLaren)

4. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)

14. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)

15. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)

18. George Russell (Mercedes)

19. Kevin Magnussen (Haas)

20. Logan Sargeant (Williams)

Mercedes.png

13:19

Not all harmony in the Mercedes camp though...

With Hamilton on pole, it should be a happy Mercedes camp - but on the other side of the room, George Russell was extremely frustrated that the team's strategy had cost him the chance to get out of Q1.

The British racer starts today's race in 18th place - only Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant are behind him on the grid. He'll be eager to make his way through the crowd in front of him - but from there, any points are a bonus.

Here's the report yesterday on Russell's anger.

Lewis Hamilton's first pole for 595 days

It's been a long time since the seven-time champion has led the field for the big race - 595 days to be precise. He'll be desperate to make the most of it in Hungary today. It won't be easy, he was only three-thousandths of a second quicker than reigning world champ Max Verstappen, who is second in his Red Bull.

Here's how Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy reported on yesterday's qualifying session.

Hello and welcome to coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix

Hello, and welcome to Mail Sport's live coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix this afternoon.

Lewis Hamilton pulled off a sensational qualifying period to get first place on the grid at the Hungaroring yet again - and he's on the front row with Max Verstappen for the first time in a long while. It could be a tasty opening corner.

The race gets underway at 3pm local time in Hungary - 2pm UK time - or just under an hour away. We'll be looking ahead to today's race and then coverage of the event.
