Marvel Fighting: Tōkon Souls has seemingly had a bit of a rough start to life, with the game's launch kicking off with optimization complaints on top of PSN issues. Now, just over two weeks after the game's August 6 launch, numbers have come out that indicate its commercial performance may also be a bit of a disappointment.
According to @GameDataLibrary on X, an account that tracks Japanese game sales, Marvel Fighting: Tōkon Souls underperformed in Japan, raking in a mere 2,814 retail sales during its launch week. Retail sales only account for physical sales, and Japanese physical sales are disproportionately high compared to other markets, with some PS5 games seeing up to 51% of sales coming from physical copies.
However, even assuming the typical split of around 75-80% physical sales, that's only just barely above 10,000 unit sales on PS5 in Japan during launch week. Marvel Fighting: Tōkon Souls is also available on both the Xbox Series consoles and PC. While Xbox data is scarce, SteamDB shows that the game peaked at 24,498 concurrent players on launch day, with daily peak concurrent player counts dropping since then and on-track to peak at around 3,500 players on publication date.
Game Data Library confirms that these figures are "well under all the Marvel vs. Capcom games," and "less than half of the Marvel Fighting Collection." It also adds that Marvel Tōkon is "the worst launch for an Arc System fighter in Japan...well below most of the Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and even Under Night in Birth."
