Samsung has officially expanded its mobile automotive ecosystem by rolling out digital car key support for Volkswagen electric vehicles through Samsung Wallet across Europe.

This integration allows owners of compatible Galaxy smartphones to replace conventional physical key fobs, enabling them to conveniently lock, unlock, and start designated electric vehicle models directly from their devices.

The system utilizes two primary wireless protocols: Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Near Field Communication (NFC). Through UWB technology, users experience genuine hands-free passive keyless entry, unlocking doors and activating the ignition automatically without removing the smartphone from a pocket or bag. Alternatively, NFC capabilities allow drivers to simply tap their phone against the exterior door handle or interior reader to access and start the car.

Vehicle compatibility covers a broad selection of Volkswagen’s electric lineup, including the Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID. Buzz. However, functionality depends on the specific hardware package and software readiness. Eligible vehicles must include the optional Preparation for Digital Key equipment package, run software version 6.0.1, and feature a production date on or after April 27, 2026.

Beyond standard locking and driving functions, Samsung Wallet provides flexible key management tools. Vehicle owners can securely share digital keys with family members or trusted contacts while defining customized access permissions and duration limits. The built-in Remote Key Entry feature also offers extra convenience, allowing users to remotely pop the trunk or trigger specific vehicle actions from the app interface.

Security is reinforced through robust hardware-level encryption. The digital credentials adhere to the strict EAL6+ certification standard and remain stored inside an isolated environment protected by Samsung Knox. If a phone is lost or stolen, owners can immediately track, lock, or revoke access credentials remotely using Samsung Find.

According to SammyGuru, currently limited to the European market, Volkswagen has not yet confirmed deployment schedules for the United States or other global regions.
