Design, Display, & Build Quality

Starting with its design, the ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) follows the same premium design philosophy as its larger Zenbook S16 sibling, but packages it into a considerably smaller and lighter 14-inch form factor. Both laptops share a nearly identical design language, with similar styling, ventilation grilles, port placement, and overall construction. The S14, however, is clearly aimed at users who place greater importance on portability without wanting to sacrifice the premium feel of the larger model.

ASUS uses its proprietary Ceraluminum™ material for the cover, combining the lightweight characteristics of metal with the hardness and wear resistance associated with ceramic. The material gives the notebook a distinctive tactile finish while also helping improve resistance against everyday scratches and wear. The Zenbook S14 is available in Scandinavian White and Antrim Gray, with both finishes complementing its understated and minimalist appearance.

Portability is where the Zenbook S14 particularly stands out – measuring between 11.9 mm and 12.9 mm in thickness, the laptop weighs just 1.2 kg. The compact dimensions make it noticeably easier to carry than the larger Zenbook S16, especially for users who regularly work while travelling or commuting. Despite the lightweight construction, the chassis feels reassuringly solid, and the notebook also meets the US MIL-STD 810H military-grade standard for additional durability.

The EasyLift™ hinge contributes to the polished overall experience, offering smooth opening and closing while keeping the display stable during use. The hinge is designed to provide carefully balanced resistance, making the lid easy to operate without introducing excessive screen wobble.

The centrepiece of the Zenbook S14 is its 14-inch ASUS Lumina OLED touchscreen display. Despite the smaller panel size, ASUS retains the same sharp 3K resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels and a productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio. The result is an impressively crisp display with plenty of workspace for documents, web browsing, photo editing, and other productivity tasks while keeping the overall footprint compact.

The OLED panel supports a 120 Hz refresh rate and a fast 0.2 ms response time, resulting in noticeably smoother scrolling, animations, and general interface interactions. It covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and is PANTONE Validated, making it suitable for creative workloads where accurate color reproduction matters. The display also supports 1.07 billion colors and carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification, benefiting from the deep blacks and excellent contrast inherent to OLED technology.

Brightness reaches 500 nits during regular use and up to 1,100 nits for HDR content. Combined with the panel’s 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, HDR movies and compatible visual content look particularly impressive, with bright highlights and deep shadow detail. ASUS has also included an anti-glare treatment, which helps manage reflections during everyday use.

For extended working sessions, the display offers TÜV Rheinland and SGS Eye Care certifications alongside technology designed to reduce harmful blue light emissions by up to 70%. Touch input is supported, along with stylus functionality, giving users additional flexibility for handwritten notes, sketching, and other touch-based interactions.

The keyboard deck maintains the familiar Zenbook layout, featuring a backlit Chiclet keyboard with 1.1 mm key travel and a dedicated Copilot key. The keys provide a comfortable and responsive typing experience despite the notebook’s extremely thin profile. ASUS also uses durable Excimer-coated keycaps designed to resist fingerprints and wear over extended use.

Below the keyboard sits a large precision touchpad that makes good use of the available space on the compact chassis. ASUS Smart Gestures allow users to control frequently accessed functions directly from the touchpad, including adjusting volume and brightness or navigating through a video timeline. These gestures add useful shortcuts without cluttering the physical keyboard with additional controls. You can see a dedicated Copilot+ key instead of the right Ctrl key.

The Zenbook S14 and Zenbook S16 also share a very similar physical layout for their connectivity options. On the left side of the S14 are 2 x Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C ports supporting DisplayPort and Power Delivery with transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, alongside an HDMI 2.1 TMDS port and a 3.5 mm combo audio jack. The right side houses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port capable of speeds up to 10 Gbps. Unlike the larger Zenbook S16, however, the S14 does not include the full-sized SD card reader.

Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, Tri-band) with a 2 x 2 configuration and Bluetooth 6.0, providing support for the latest wireless networking and compatible peripherals. Considering its compact dimensions, the physical connectivity selection remains practical enough for everyday productivity while allowing users to connect external displays, storage devices, and docks without relying entirely on adapters.

The underside continues the same minimalist design approach seen on the Zenbook S16, with ventilation positioned similarly as part of ASUS’s thermal architecture. Internally, the Zenbook S14 uses a redesigned cooling system comprising dual fans, an ultra-slim vapor chamber, bi-layer graphite sheets, and precision CNC-machined ventilation. According to ASUS, the vapor chamber is 37% larger, helping improve heat dissipation and lower device temperatures by up to 4°C.

The cooling solution is designed to sustain up to a 28 W TDP while remaining particularly quiet during lighter workloads. ASUS claims noise levels can remain below 25 dB under light usage, making the notebook well suited to quiet working environments such as offices, classrooms, and libraries.

For multimedia, ASUS equips the Zenbook S14 with a four-speaker audio system, providing a more immersive setup than the conventional dual-speaker arrangement found on many compact ultrabooks. Combined with the high-quality OLED display, the audio setup makes the notebook particularly capable for movies, music, and general entertainment despite its smaller dimensions.

The laptop also features a Full HD IR camera with Windows Hello facial recognition support. Security is further strengthened through the Microsoft Pluton security processor and ASUS Adaptive Lock, which can detect when the user moves away and automatically secure the device. ASUS also highlights Voice Print Technology, designed to recognise individual voices for more personalised AI interactions.

Overall, the ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) takes much of what makes the larger Zenbook S16 appealing and delivers it in a more compact and travel-friendly package. The shared design language gives both laptops a similarly premium character, while the S14’s 1.2 kg weight and smaller footprint make it particularly attractive for users who prioritise mobility. With its premium Ceraluminum™ construction, excellent 3K 120 Hz OLED touchscreen, practical connectivity, sophisticated cooling system, and thoughtful usability features, the Zenbook S14 feels like a genuinely compact flagship ultrabook rather than simply a smaller version of the S16.

Verdict – ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) Review

The ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) positions itself as a premium AI-powered ultrabook for users who prioritise portability without wanting to compromise on display quality, everyday performance, battery endurance, or premium build quality. Sharing much of its design philosophy with the larger Zenbook S16, the S14 delivers a similar flagship experience in a considerably more compact 14-inch form factor that weighs just 1.2 kg.

One of its biggest strengths is how well ASUS has balanced portability with premium hardware. The all-metal chassis with a distinctive Ceraluminum™ cover gives the laptop a refined identity, while its ultra-thin 1.19 cm to 1.29 cm profile makes it exceptionally easy to carry. The 14-inch 3K ASUS Lumina OLED touchscreen is another major highlight, combining a 120 Hz refresh rate, 0.2 ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, and up to 1,100 nits HDR peak brightness to deliver an excellent experience for productivity, entertainment, and creative work.

Performance is equally well suited to the notebook’s intended audience. The higher-end Intel Core Ultra 9 386H configuration combines a 16-core CPU with integrated Intel Graphics and a dedicated Intel NPU delivering up to 50 TOPS of AI performance. Paired with 32 GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, the laptop provides plenty of performance for demanding multitasking, office productivity, media consumption, and creative workloads while remaining ready for the growing range of on-device AI experiences available through the Copilot+ PC platform.

The Zenbook S14 also performs strongly when it comes to everyday usability. The comfortable backlit keyboard, large precision touchpad with ASUS Smart Gestures, four-speaker audio system, Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, Windows Hello facial recognition, and Microsoft Pluton security all contribute to a polished experience. ASUS’s software ecosystem, including MyASUS, StoryCube, GlideX, ScreenXpert, and Omni, further expands its productivity capabilities without taking away from the clean Windows experience.

Its thermal engineering is particularly impressive considering the compact dimensions. The dual-fan cooling system, enlarged ultra-slim vapor chamber, bi-layer graphite sheets, and carefully designed ventilation allow the notebook to support up to a 28 W TDP while maintaining quiet operation during lighter workloads. Its combination of a gorgeous 3K 120 Hz OLED touchscreen, ultra-light 1.2 kg design, Intel Core Ultra Series 3 performance, up to 50 TOPS of dedicated AI acceleration, excellent battery capacity, and thoughtful connectivity makes it a compelling choice for professionals, students, frequent travellers, and anyone looking for a powerful everyday laptop that remains genuinely easy to carry.

For users who like what the larger Zenbook S16 offers but prefer a smaller and lighter machine, the Zenbook S14 is arguably the more practical choice. It retains many of the qualities that define ASUS’s premium Zenbook lineup while placing a stronger emphasis on mobility, making the ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) a well-rounded premium Copilot+ PC for productivity, travel, entertainment, and the next generation of AI-powered computing.
