Overview

Lesbian Space Princess is a 2025 Australian adult animated sci-fi comedy film written and directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese. It follows Saira, an introverted lesbian princess from the planet Clitopolis, who sets out across the galaxy after her bounty-hunter ex-girlfriend Kiki is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens. The film combines queer comedy, romance, musical elements and absurdist science-fiction.

Background

The film originated from the collaboration between animators/writers Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese. According to interviews with the filmmakers, the title “Lesbian Space Princess” came first, after Hough Hobbs came up with the phrase while in the shower; the pair subsequently built the story around it. They wanted to create a playful, escapist film aimed primarily at queer audiences while still telling a broader story about self-worth and self-love.

The official trailer for the movie was released on 31 July 2025 on Umbrella Entertainment’s official YouTube account, garnering 647,000 views and 6.3k likes within a year.

Production was supported through the South Australian Film Corporation and Adelaide Film Festival’s Film Lab: New Voices initiative. The film had preview screenings at the Adelaide Film Festival in October 2024 before receiving its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2025, where it won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film. It subsequently screened at several international festivals before its Australian theatrical release in September 2025.

In August 2026, Lesbian Space Princess experienced a sudden resurgence on social media nearly a year after its original release. The film began appearing in memes and posts portraying it as a universally hated movie, with users joking that different fandoms had temporarily united against it. The trend spread particularly heavily through TikTok, Reddit, and X/Twitter. Reddit users began posting reaction images and memes about the phenomenon, while others joked about encountering the film for the first time solely because of the hate posts.

One of the major reasons of the posts against said show was about the show’s main villain, dubbed the “Straight White Maliens”, with many criticizing about the character being a nod to heterophobia and the overall irony of the character.

One of the major meme formats involved screenshots or reaction images depicting characters from unrelated fandoms supposedly joining forces to hate Lesbian Space Princess. A post on r/lovethissmug using this format received more than 7,600 upvotes, while a related r/whenthe post received over 12,000 upvotes, demonstrating how quickly the joke spread across Reddit.
