The term "cargo cults" was coined in the 1940s to describe movements of Pacific people responding to colonisation by western powers.

After observing US military personnel and their supplies arrive by air during the World War Two and colonisation by western countries, some went as far as building airstrips, warehouses and imitation radio antennae in anticipation of planes full of goods that never came.

But as former Chair of Antrhopology at the University of Tulsa, Lamont Lindstrom, tells Suzanne Hill, it was much more complicated than that.
