New York City FC's victory over Santos Laguna wasn't built only on finishing chances or defensive resilience. One of the most important elements of the performance was what happened immediately after NYCFC lost the ball.

Pascal Jansen's side repeatedly attempted to recover possession quickly, preventing Santos from turning defensive situations into dangerous counterattacks. It was aggressive, coordinated and, at its best, exactly the type of football Jansen wants his team to play.

That pressing identity could become one of NYCFC's biggest weapons in the Leagues Cup.

Turning Defense Into Attack

The purpose of NYCFC's press isn't simply to disrupt opponents. It is designed to create opportunities.
