New York City FC's victory over Santos Laguna wasn't built only on finishing chances or defensive resilience. One of the most important elements of the performance was what happened immediately after NYCFC lost the ball.

Pascal Jansen's side repeatedly attempted to recover possession quickly, preventing Santos from turning defensive situations into dangerous counterattacks. It was aggressive, coordinated and, at its best, exactly the type of football Jansen wants his team to play.

That pressing identity could become one of NYCFC's biggest weapons in the Leagues Cup.

Turning Defense Into Attack

The purpose of NYCFC's press isn't simply to disrupt opponents. It is designed to create opportunities.

When New York loses possession, the closest players immediately apply pressure while teammates close passing lanes behind them. If the ball is recovered high up the field, NYCFC can attack before the opposition has time to reorganize.

Against Santos Laguna, that approach helped keep the Mexican side uncomfortable and allowed New York to spend longer stretches playing on the front foot.

It also highlighted an important evolution under Jansen: NYCFC increasingly looks like a team defending collectively rather than relying on its back line to solve problems.

The forwards initiate the pressure, midfielders compress the space behind them and defenders maintain an aggressive position to keep the team compact.

Can NYCFC Maintain That Intensity?

The challenge is sustainability.

Pressing at high intensity requires enormous physical commitment, particularly during a tournament played alongside the MLS schedule. If the distances between players become too large, opponents can break the first line of pressure and attack the space left behind.

That is where Jansen's squad depth becomes critical.

Rotation, intelligent substitutions and tactical flexibility will be necessary if NYCFC wants to maintain its intensity deeper into the competition.

But the potential reward is significant. Against technically gifted Liga MX teams, denying time and space can disrupt their rhythm before their attacking quality becomes decisive.

NYCFC showed against Santos Laguna that it possesses the energy and organization to do exactly that.

If Jansen can maintain that balance throughout the tournament, New York's press may become more than a tactical feature.

It could become the identity that carries NYCFC deep into the 2026 Leagues Cup.
