Synoptic Data has been awarded a contract by the Met Office to redevelop and provide operational support for three EUMETNET weather observation data hubs.

The agreement covers the EUMETNET Aircraft Based Observations Programme (E-ABO), the EUMETNET GNSS Water Vapour Programme (E-GVap) and the EUMETNET Operational Vertical Profiling Programme (E-Profile). The project is intended to modernize infrastructure that enables weather observation sharing across national meteorological and hydrological services (NMHS) in Europe.

The E-ABO data hub processes AMDAR observations from European airlines. The E-Profile hub processes data from instruments including radar wind profilers, weather radars, Doppler wind lidar, microwave radiometers, automatic lidars and ceilometers. The E-GVap hub receives observations from geodetic centers and converts them into a format usable by NMHS.

Under the contract, Synoptic will work on reliability, quality control, data consistency and secure delivery across the three services. The initial agreement between EUMETNET and Synoptic runs 2.5 years, with options for five years of further operational support and maintenance subject to annual funding approvals.
