Cllr Nicola Jenkins has announced she has joined the Greens, just over a year after she quit the Labour Party to become an independent.

Cllr Jenkins, who represents the Bretton Ward, said she was ‘excited’ to join the group.

She said: “I'm excited to begin working with the Green group on tackling residents issues. Empathy lays at the heart of what they stand for which is in alignment with the reasons I became involved with politics. They have also been very accommodating with my health and disability needs. I'd like to thank them for making me feel so welcome.”

The move means that The Green Party will now have eight city councillors.

Group leader cllr Heather Skibsted said: “As a Green group we are excited and delighted to welcome Nicola Jenkins into our growing group of councillors. We will now be 8 councillors in the group – the largest this group has ever been and know that her skills and experience will complement those of our existing members. We know that she shares the values that have brought us all into the Green party and look forward very much to working together with her.”

Cllr Jenkins, who was first elected to the council in May 2024, left the Labour Party in August 2025, saying ‘It has become increasingly challenging to follow a party line that often prioritises political narratives over the best interests of my ward and Peterborough as a whole.’

The move means the make up of the city council is as follows:

Conservatives: 14 councillors

Labour: 10 councillors

Green Party: 8 councillors

Liberal Democrats: 8 councillors

Peterborough First: 8 councillors

Independent: 8 councillors

Reform UK: 4 councillors
