The Chhattisgarh government has launched an online system to verify degrees and academic records issued by private universities in the State, in a bid to curb fraudulent qualifications and improve oversight of private higher education institutions.

Academic and institutional information related to all 21 private universities operating in Chhattisgarh will be available through the platform. Students, parents, employers and other institutions will be able to check academic credentials without having to approach individual universities for verification.

The portal, cgpurc.cgstate.gov.in, has been developed by the Chhattisgarh Private Universities Regulatory Commission, and was recently launched by Governor Ramen Deka.

Officials said this is expected to help authorities identify irregularities such as degrees issued without corresponding admission records or academic records created through backdated entries.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the initiative was aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in higher education while ensuring that students have access to accurate information.

“Our government is giving the highest priority to students futures and the quality of higher education. This system of digital records will give students accurate information while strengthening transparency, accountability and trust in the higher education system,” Sai said.

Apart from degree verification, the portal will provide information on courses being offered by individual universities and their approval or recognition status. This will allow prospective students to check the status of an institution and its programmes before taking admission.

The initiative could also simplify verification for employers. Instead of seeking confirmation separately from universities, recruiters will be able to use the online system to check the authenticity of academic qualifications and the corresponding student records.

Officials said the State government is also strengthening monitoring of academic activity at private universities. Courses reporting low enrolment, weak academic performance or repeated complaints will come under review.

The regulatory framework will examine whether such programmes have adequate faculty, regular classroom teaching, examinations and other required academic activity. Action may be taken where prescribed academic standards are not being maintained.

The portal will additionally provide information on university fees, serving officials, statutory and other committees, their members and PhD research guides.
