Patek Philippe has opened its first standalone boutique in Australia. The Hour Glass unveiled the store at 388 George Street in Sydney on 25 August, on the corner of George and King.

It’s taken a while. The Hour Glass has sold Patek here for close to four decades through multi-brand salons on King Street and Collins Street, but nobody has ever given the brand its own front door in this country.

The site is bigger in scope than a watch shop. Alongside the gallery and private consultation rooms, there are celebration rooms, a bar, and a dedicated event space on the top floor for collector nights and watchmaking presentations.

The address does some work too. 388 George Street sits on the corner of George and King, one of the most prominent retail intersections in the CBD, in the building long known as King George Tower, the John Andrews design that took the Sulman Medal in 1983.

Michael Tay, Group Managing Director of The Hour Glass, said Sydney has long had an engaged community of collectors and that the boutique gives them somewhere to mark personal milestones.

Why now matters more than what’s inside. Australian demand for Patek was never the problem. Where that demand got serviced was.

For years, the routine among serious local collectors was to build the relationship offshore, usually in Singapore, sometimes in Hong Kong, and bring the watch home in the carry-on. A collector event floor is a direct attempt to stop that.

The opening also lands in the middle of a reshuffle of Australian watch retail. Kennedy sold its Rolex licence to The Hour Glass in 2025, then in January signed its Chadstone Patek Philippe boutique over to Cortina Watch, a separate Singapore group, in a deal reported at A$24.5 million.

Two of the most valuable retail relationships in the country left Australian hands inside a year, both of them to Singapore. For anyone who has tried to get onto a Patek waitlist here, that shift matters more than the marble does.

Patek in Australia is now split between two Singaporean operators, Cortina at Chadstone and The Hour Glass in Sydney. Kennedy, the Australian family business that first put the Cubitus on our wrist, has sold out of both marques.

It’s also a confidence play in a market that has cooled. The pandemic boom has flattened out and the brand’s back catalogue has been carrying resale ever since it killed off the steel Nautilus 5711, a decision that turned a discontinued watch into a legend.

You don’t build celebration rooms for a brand you think has peaked. Whether the hype holds up is a separate argument, and one we’ve had before.

The Australian watch scene spent two decades being treated as an outpost, a market that got allocation once the important ones had eaten. That era looks to be finishing, and the replacement is a smaller field with far more money behind it.
