The possibility of a multi-day nor’easter in New England has forced changes to the upcoming series between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.
The two teams are set to finish up their regular season with a three-game series at Fenway Park, but with inclement weather expected to ratchet up over the weekend, the teams will get an early start to their series.
According to the Red Sox, their Sunday game with the Cubs will move to a 12:05 p.m. Central time start on Friday afternoon. The two teams will then play the second game of a split doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. Friday.
The two teams are currently scheduled to play at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, but that could change if forecasts dictate.
According to NBC Boston meteorologists, an early fall nor’easter is expected to blast the East Coast this weekend with 50 mph winds and heavy rain. Bands of heavy-to-moderate rain are expected to intensify as the weekend moves along, especially Saturday evening and then into Sunday.
The series change comes as the Cubs could have to play all three games in order to determine their playoff seeding. As things stand, the Cubs are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for the top wild card spot in the National League, which would come with home-field advantage in a Wild Card Series.
Major League Baseball would likely want to avoid forcing the teams to play a final game on Monday, since the Wild Card Series would be scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
The Cubs meanwhile will play two more games against the Miami Marlins, with the first scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:40 p.m.
