“Widow’s Bay” has won Outstanding Comedy Series at the 78th Primetime Emmys, giving it a signature win in its debut season. The genre-bending show was notable for its unpredictability and wide range of episode styles, with the TV Academy clearly rewarding its creativity.

“Widow’s Bay” is a collaboration between creator Katie Dippold and director and producer Hiro Murai. The two collaborators received the Wavelength Award at the 2026 IndieWire Honors. In an interview ahead of the ceremony, they explained the show’s origins and the great lengths they went to recreate the strange tone of Dippold’s childhood memories.

“Every summer we would go to the Long Branch [New Jersey] boardwalk, and there was a haunted house that was very questionable,” Dippold said. “It was the ’80s, they would chase you around, this is when they could grab you. Halloween and horror events were really big in my family, and I loved it so much, and so I’d be so giddy going through this haunted house. I didn’t know if I was going to laugh or scream. That feeling has been something I’ve been trying to capture my whole life, and I’ve always wanted to see it on screen.”

“I think the first thing she told me [about the tone she wanted for the show] was her memory of going to this haunted house on the pier in New Jersey and that sense of anxiety and anticipation, but the fun kind, the giddiness,” Murai added. “That felt like such a fun thing to tap into, and I haven’t really seen anything, especially on TV, that plays with that.”

IndieWire’s Ben Travers awarded the show a Critic’s Pick, writing that the “10-episode first season isn’t just an allegory for learning to accept and conquer life’s inescapable anxieties; its horrors are irrefutable for everyone onscreen, which makes for a cathartic, curious, and chilling experience for everyone watching at home. The people of ‘Widow’s Bay’ take their terrors seriously so that viewers know it’s fair to do the same with their own, while their sensible sense of humor not only humanizes our delightful gaggle of weirdos, it helps heighten the scares. And with Murai directing and Christian Sprenger behind the camera, the tone is as close to ‘Teddy Perkins’ as anything we’ve seen since.”

For “Widow’s Bay” fans, the fun doesn’t have to end tonight. Apple TV has already renewed the show for Season 2, and we can only imagine where it might go next.
