BOROUGH PARK (VINnews) – A Brighton Beach man is under arrest and facing multiple charges after police said he repeatedly punched a well-known Hasidic rabbi outside the rabbi’s Boro Park home Wednesday night.

Police said 31-year-old Eric Avrutov approached the 66-year-old victim in front of 375 Dahill Road at about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday and struck him repeatedly in the face and body with a closed fist.

Surveillance video from the scene captured the attack, showing the suspect repeatedly beating the rabbi. Police arrived at the scene very quickly and apprehended Avrutov, who was arrested a short time later.

The victim, who asked not to be identified, is a well-known and respected Hasidic rabbi who leads a local shul. He was transported to a hospital with a bloody face and a fractured shoulder, according to information provided to VINnews.

Avrutov, who has multiple prior arrests for assault and criminal contempt and has previously been subject to an order of protection, is charged with two counts of assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and harassment.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the attack. According to information available at this time, the rabbi and Avrutov did not know each other before the incident.

No hate-crime charges have been filed at this time. Police could add additional charges, including hate-crime charges, as the investigation continues.
