JSW Group has entered India’s electric commercial vehicle (ECV) market through its subsidiary JSW Greentech Limited, which will manufacture and sell electric trucks and buses under the brand name Ampstar.

The company has invested ₹2,500 crore to establish a manufacturing facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with an installed capacity of 15,000 vehicles annually. The plant, spread across 90 acres, has been completed in 16 months and production is scheduled to begin from October 2026, senior company executives said.

At peak utilisation, the facility is expected to generate a turnover of around ₹12,000 crore, they added.

JSW Greentech aims to build an integrated electric mobility ecosystem rather than limiting itself to vehicle manufacturing. Along with electric trucks and buses, the company plans to offer charging infrastructure, fleet operating solutions, financing options and after-sales services to help commercial operators transition to electric mobility.

Customers will have the option to choose from multiple ownership models, including outright purchase, leasing, Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) and other operating models. The vehicles will be available with power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW, catering to different commercial applications.

The manufacturing facility will feature advanced automotive technologies, including India’s first pre-treatment and electro-deposition (PT-ED) process for bus manufacturing, a technology widely adopted in developed automotive markets. The plant will also house an automated truck cabin manufacturing line and an integrated battery ecosystem.

JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said the company’s entry into electric commercial mobility was driven by the larger objective of reducing India’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“When we decided to enter electric commercial mobility, I saw it as an act of nation-building — moving India’s people and goods on power generated within India rather than fuel sourced from outside,” Jindal said.

He added that while global oil prices remain beyond India’s control, reducing dependence on imported energy was an area where domestic industry could contribute.

JSW Director Parth Jindal said the group aims to become one of India’s largest electric commercial vehicle players. He said the vehicles have undergone extensive testing across JSW Group companies and will initially target point-to-point operations, where range concerns are limited.

The company plans to partner with charging infrastructure providers in key deployment sectors to support fleet operators.

JSW Greentech CEO Sumit Mittal said the company’s electric mobility portfolio “is to cover a wide spectrum”. On the bus side, Ampstar will offer models ranging from 7 metres to 18 metres, catering to staff transportation, city, intercity and school mobility segments.

In the truck segment, the company will initially launch a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, among the most demanding commercial vehicle categories, with plans to expand into tippers and fixed-body dumpers in the coming months.
