The return of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz has been delayed even further. As initially reported by Automotive News, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is now set to return for the 2028 model year, instead of the 2027 model year as originally intended. A Volkswagen representative confirmed the report in a statement to Car and Driver.

Back in December 2025, Volkswagen had announced that the ID.Buzz, the stylish electric van that had only just arrived that year, would be skipping the 2026 model year, but VW was adamant that it would return to the U.S. lineup. In May, VW proclaimed that the ID.Buzz was back with a handful of updates for the 2027 model year, and sales were expected to begin in August. But VW never got around to announcing pricing, and August came and went with no sign of the updated ID.Buzz.

Now, Volkswagen says the ID.Buzz will go on sale in the first half of 2027, meaning it will arrive as a 2028-model-year vehicle. Along with the previously announced changes—which included a switch to the NACS-style charge port and a new Tourer aimed at people who like camping—the 2028 ID.Buzz is also now set to gain reworked software, vehicle-to-load functionality, and digital key integration.

Volkswagen said it will share more details in the next several months, before the ID.Buzz reaches dealerships sometime before July next year. It will be interesting to see if the updates can bring more meaningful sales for the retro-styled electric van. In its first full year on sale in 2025, the ID.Buzz managed to move a mere 6140 units. Despite not introducing a 2026 model, VW appears to have had plenty of inventory on its lots, selling 2481 units through the first half of 2026, which is actually 16 more than it sold in the first six months of 2025. Still, most of the remaining ID.Buzzes seem to have found homes, with Cars.com showing just 35 new units for sale at the time of publication.
