Akasa Air, India’s third-largest airline, is in talks to order more than 200 Boeing 737 MAX jets, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg, as the airline looks to expand its share of India’s growing air travel market and secure aircraft deliveries into the next decade.

The Mumbai-based carrier, which began operations in 2022, already has unfilled orders for 183 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the report said. The additional purchase would allow Akasa to continue growing its fleet beyond 2032.

Akasa currently operates a fleet of 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. It took delivery of nine planes so far this calendar year.

A decision on the potential order is expected early next year, while terms are likely to be finalised in the second half of 2027, the sources told the publication.

The potential order comes as Akasa continues to expand its fleet of Boeing’s fuel-efficient 737 MAX jets. The airline currently operates 43 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and has orders for additional planes scheduled for delivery over the next decade.

The airline is targeting a 60:40 domestic-international capacity split over the next two to three years. As more planes join the fleet, Akasa plans to deploy a larger share of capacity on international routes.

The strategy builds on Akasa’s international expansion. DGCA data showed the airline carried 400,525 international passengers in the first half of 2026, exceeding the 368,743 passengers flown during the whole of 2025 as it expanded overseas destinations and capacity.

“I can see us getting up to 60-40... maybe two to three years from now,” chief executive Vinay Dube told ET in August. “I think 60-40 is not unrealistic in that timeframe. As aircraft deliveries improve, we will allocate more capacity to international destinations.”
