Solo travel has experienced something of a boom in recent years, with more of us than ever heading out alone to tick off bucket-list destinations and see more of the world.

Indeed, solo flight departures have increased by 89 per cent over the past ten years, with women particularly finding joy in solo exploration. 

However, despite the evident demand for individual travel, solo travellers are still paying the price for adventuring on their own.

As shown by new research by Travel Supermarket, costs can rack up significantly for solo travellers, forced to pay more than couples able to share rooms and split prices.

The new data has revealed the priciest spots to go to alone, as well as the destinations that are easier on the wallet when you're riding solo.

The analysis looked at the average price per person of a seven-night holiday for one adult, and then compared it with the average price per person for two adults sharing, thus calculating the 'solo tax' forced upon lone travellers.

While numerous Spanish destinations were shown to be on the pricier side for individual travellers, Thailand and Dubai proved more forgiving on solo travellers' wallets.

Solo travellers might want to expand their budget before heading to Barcelona, as the bustling city has the highest tax for those holidaying alone.

The research found it costs a whopping 84 per cent more for an individual to explore the city's foodie scene, cultural offerings and buzzy nightlife than the average couple. 

Indeed, a week in the Catalan capital costs solo travellers an average of £1,834, compared with an average of £1,001 per person for a pair.

Another Mediterranean spot, Corfu, ranked as the second most expensive destination for solo travellers. 

The dreamy island costs an average of 81 per cent more for those visiting on their own. 

A solo traveller might pay around £1,687 for a week exploring the beaches and characterful villages and towns, but a couple could expect to spend only £931.  

Ibiza, the popular party island, follows closely in third place for the most expensive destinations for those travelling alone.

Solo travellers to the Balearic beach spot face 80.4 per cent higher costs for sampling the world-famous nightlife, or fabulous restaurants.

A pair of travellers might pay around £1,057 each on the party island, while someone visiting nightclubs such as Pacha or Amnesia as an individual would have to cough up around £1,911. 

Millions head to the Big Apple every year to take in the skyscrapers, iconic sights and fabulous food scene.

Those doing it alone, though, will have to pay a higher price for their time in one of the US's most popular cities. 

A week's stay in New York for a couple averages at £2,023 each, whereas a solo traveller could face a bill of around £3,465.

That's a whopping 71.5 per cent solo tax.  

Marrakesh rounds off the top five most expensive destinations for solo travellers. 

A week's stay for a couple could come to around £903 each, whereas a solo holidaymaker could pay up to around £1,540.

Visitors heading to Marrakesh alone face a solo tax of 70.6 per cent.

Experts at Travel Supermarket found Khao Lak in southern Thailand to be the best destination for solo travellers from an affordability standpoint.

A week at the coastal region costs around £1,400 for someone visiting alone, whereas a couple might pay around £1,155 each – a much smaller 21.4 per cent solo tax and £245 difference.  

Thailand's largest island, Phuket, ranked second – suggesting the area as a whole offers good value for solo travellers.

Solo travellers might spend around £1,967 for a week, whereas a couple could pay £1,603.

The 23 per cent solo tax makes it a more affordable option for those visiting alone.  

Bringing Europe into the mix, the Bourgas area is a bustling coastal spot with plenty to offer, such as seeing Lake Atanasovsko's distinct pink hue, relaxing at the beach or visiting Sea Garden, a beautiful park.

And luckily for solo travellers, it won't cost an arm and a leg to enjoy all that this region has on offer.

A pair of holidaymakers might spend around £595 each, while a solo visitor could have to pay £777 – just 30.6 per cent more. 

While known for its skyscrapers, impressive shopping malls and luxury, Dubai offers solo travellers a reasonable price tag.

A couple could expect to pay around £1,407 each to visit the UAE city. Meanwhile, going solo could set you back £1,848-31.4 per cent more.  

The historic Greek capital of Athens rounds off the top five cheaper destinations for solo travellers.

A couple visiting Athens could pay an average of £959 per person, while someone going alone might cough up £1,274.

Solo travellers will find they are only charged around 32.7 per cent more.
