With the vast amount of people you come across in the airport and how many surfaces you touch along the way, travelling can often feel unhygienic.

However, there are plenty of hacks to help you feel more clean during your next flight. 

Research has revealed that toilets on planes have 'extremely high and concerning levels' of human faeces. The same goes for loos in airports, where a high level of bacterial contamination was found too, the Standard reports. 

Public toilets in both spaces were discovered to have more than 32,000 colony-forming units (CFUs) of faecal streptococci, which is a bacterium often found in human faeces.

Director of Sanctuary Bathrooms James Roberts, the company that carried out the research, described the findings as a 'significant cause for concern' and shared tips for keeping the germs at bay when you're jetting off overseas. 

Popping a packet of antibacterial wipes in your hand luggage will be useful for wiping down the toilet button and taps, according to the expert. 

It's an inexpensive way to reduce any contamination, with packs available for just £9.99 for nine on Amazon, and they won't take up too much space in your bag. 

Hand sanitiser is another packing essential recommended by Mr Roberts, and it can be picked up for as little as £5.40 for a pack of six – handy if the soap on the plane runs out. 

There's possibly not a situation more dire than using a public toilet - only to find there's no loo roll left.

Except, perhaps, when you're 30,000ft in the air. 

Fortunately, packing some extra toilet roll won't take up too much space, and there's the option of bringing specific toilet wipes too.

However, make sure to dispose of any wipes in the bin - even those labelled as flushable - as they can clog aeroplane plumbing systems.  

It can be easy to kick off your shoes and get comfortable during a flight, especially when it's a long-haul journey, but it might not be the most hygienic way to walk around the plane. 

'During our training, we learned that the liquid on the lavatory floor is often more than just water,' former commercial flight attendant Hilary Clark told Vice. It could be something as innocent as a spilt drink, or something much worse - such as urine.

'Walking barefoot exposes your feet to bacteria, viruses, and fungi,' said infectious disease specialist Dr Dahlia Philips.

Disposable slippers are a better option than going barefoot, or comfy slip-ons with a hard sole that will protect your feet. 

If you need to take items to the bathroom with you but don't want to risk something large that might catch on surfaces and need to be put down on the floor, a small travel bag will do just the trick. 

There are some handy products that could easily fold down into your hand luggage for when you don't need them yet are still big enough to hold essentials you might need when going to the loo. 

Many passengers like to refresh themselves during long flights, especially after sharing a tiny toilet with so many people for several hours.

Seasoned travellers on Reddit recommend packing travel-sized mouthwash for a quick and easy way to freshen up, and there are bottles available that fit within any 100ml airport security restrictions. 

'Travel-size mouthwash can help make you feel fresher in addition to brushing your teeth,' one tourist wrote. 

Disposable toothbrushes that can be used without water are another handy way to dodge any germs in the bathroom and to help you feel clean during a flight. 

'Look for Colgate Wisps in the dental section of the supermarket,' another traveller said.

'They’re little disposable toothbrushes pre-loaded with toothpaste - you can use them without water.'
