With September now well underway, youngsters across the country will be tying ties for the first time and preparing homework diaries for the academic year to come.

But the start of this school term is of particular note: following in his father's footsteps, today marks the beginning of Prince George's career at prestigious boarding school Eton College, located in the charming county of Berkshire.

Sat along the banks of the River Thames, Eton is a historic town near London and Windsor, whose college (which dates back to 1440) boasts an impressive alumni list, including Prince William, writer George Orwell and James Bond-creator Ian Fleming. 

But aside from the school, which costs £21,891 per term (or 'half', in Eton speak) to attend, there's plenty to do in the small town and surrounding area.

The county itself is home to hotels rich in history, independent pubs serving hearty, English food as well as a variety of different attractions.

So as the young royal settles into his new school, we take a look at some of the best places to visit in Eton and Berkshire. 

Eton's high street boasts a rich mix of architecture, from medieval-style timber houses and courtyards, elegant Georgian and Victorian shopfronts as well as gothic spots, such as the Victorian Gothic Church of St. John the Evangelist.

Beginning near Windsor Bridge, the street itself stretches a full mile, and winds down past the historic Eton College Chapel. 

As well as restaurants and coffee shops, the high street is peppered with renowned tailor shops – where pupils such as George can pick up their elaborate school attire.

There are also a selection of museums near the school, including the Natural History Museum, which opened in 1875 and is free to enter.

For those wanting to admire the characterful area from the water, river cruises along the Thames are available to book.

French Brothers offers a 40-minute round trip covering Boveney Lock, Windsor Castle, Eton College, Mill House, Windsor Racecourse and The Brocas, a riverside meadow. Adult tickets are £11.90 online, and £7.90 for children.

Visitors seeking drama, live music and comedy can head to the Theatre Royal Windsor. The Edwardian venue puts on shows for every kind of audience, with a busy schedule to choose from. 

For any younger visitors in need of entertainment in and around the historic town, Legoland Windsor is only a short drive away.

With attractions such as interactive water ride 'Hydra's Challenge', as well as the Lego 'Ferrari Build and Race' experience, this fun-filled family favourite is an antidote to a day exploring Eton and Windsor's extensive cultural offerings. 

Dating back to around 1750, The George Inn describes itself as 'the most iconic pub in Eton'. With views of the River Thames and Windsor Castle, it's the perfect spot for homecooked food and a pint. 

The menu offers classics such as beer-battered fish and chips for £19.50, and a 'beef and storm stew' for £17.

And for those eager to try the breakfasts, rooms at the 18th-century inn are available from £120 in September. 

Over in Newbury, which is around a 45-minute drive from Eton and located in west Berkshire, is the Hare & Hounds.

The award-winning establishment serves up 'elevated classics with global influences' such as a west country lamb mixed grill for £26 and a chicken, gammon and leek pie for £23.95. 

The restaurant is located within a boutique hotel, a 16th-century coaching inn that offers rooms from £110 in October for two guests.

There are plenty of impressive places to stay in Berkshire, including the Monkey Island Estate.

Located on a private island on the River Thames, guests at this luxurious spot can bag a room from £225 a night for two in October. 

With timeless furnishings throughout and an intriguing history dating back centuries with monarchs, aristocrats and famous writers thrown into the mix, it's sure to be a one-of-a-kind night away.

Alternatively, The Great House in Sonning, Berkshire, is another option for visitors seeking a relaxed break. 

Set within a former Elizabethan coaching inn, the hotel offers a range of beautifully designed rooms and suites, and dogs are welcome to join their owners.
