SpaceX’s disk-shaped Starfall reentry capsule, first flown on Falcon 9 in June, now has two European integrator contracts for commercial Starship missions in 2028 and 2029.

Space Cargo Unlimited plans a one-tonne in-space factory flight; Exolaunch will aggregate research and manufacturing payloads and return them to Earth. Both deals aim to turn Starfall’s roughly 1,000-kilogram return capacity into routine access for pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and advanced materials.

Two European mission integrators have booked SpaceX’s Starfall reentry capsule for commercial flights on Starship, extending a vehicle first demonstrated on Falcon 9 this June into planned microgravity research and in-space manufacturing campaigns later this decade.

Luxembourg-based Space Cargo Unlimited announced on Sept. 15 that it has contracted a dedicated Starfall mission targeting a 2028 Starship launch.

The company intends to fly a one-tonne “space factory” using its BentoBox platform, scaling from existing 100-kilogram-class missions to the full payload mass Starfall is designed to return.

Space Cargo positions itself as an integration layer between launch and reentry hardware and industrial customers that do not want to develop their own spacecraft. The firm says it is already talking with more than 100 prospects, about 40 percent of them in life sciences and biotechnology.

Germany-headquartered Exolaunch followed on Sept. 21 with its own SpaceX contract for a Starfall mission targeted for 2029, also on Starship.

Exolaunch will act as payload integrator, aggregating experiments and manufacturing payloads from pharmaceutical, biotechnology, advanced-materials, government, and research customers, then managing integration, operations, and Earth return.

The deal is Exolaunch’s first Starship booking and its first move beyond satellite rideshare into return-to-Earth services. The company has flown hundreds of customer satellites on Falcon 9 Transporter and Bandwagon missions since 2020 and has separately booked dedicated Falcon 9 missions designated Exo-1 and Exo-2.

Starfall is SpaceX’s uncrewed, disk-shaped cargo reentry vehicle, developed to fly payloads into low Earth orbit, loiter for research or manufacturing, and return them through the atmosphere.

FAA environmental documents and subsequent reporting describe a 3.1-meter-diameter, 0.75-meter-tall capsule with an empty mass of about 2,100 kilograms and a payload capacity of up to 1,000 kilograms. An aluminum “top plate” houses cargo and cold-gas attitude control; a carbon-fiber heat shield is jettisoned after reentry.

A pilot, drogue, and main parachute then slow the vehicle for Pacific splashdown and ship recovery. Starfall has no deorbit engine and relies on its launch vehicle to set the reentry trajectory. It can fly on Falcon 9 or Starship.

SpaceX first flew Starfall on a Falcon 9 demonstration on June 23, 2026, from Cape Canaveral, with recovery in the Pacific days later.

The company has framed the vehicle as a path to routine microgravity access and point-to-point cargo return, complementary to Starship’s heavy-lift capacity. Redwire’s SpaceMD unit has also disclosed a Starfall booking.

Starfall’s one-tonne return mass is deemed enough volume and power to move in-space manufacturing from small experiments toward higher-throughput production of pharmaceuticals, biotech products, crystals, optical fiber, and other materials that benefit from microgravity.

Space Cargo’s 2028 flight is described as riding an early commercial Starship mission; Exolaunch’s 2029 flight is a later dedicated integrator slot. Neither date is an official SpaceX manifest commitment, and both depend on Starship reaching operational commercial flights.

Exolaunch is separately being acquired by EQT Private Equity. Space Cargo is also developing REV1, a larger autonomous factory and reentry vehicle based on ESA’s Space Rider with Thales Alenia Space, as a later fleet element beyond Starfall.
