Parents who spend their days at home with young kids often find themselves feeling like they accomplished little of value during the day. After all, diaper changes, snack refills, and playdates can start to feel like par for the course when you do these things day in and day out. But one mom on TikTok is reminding parents that the little, seemingly mundane things they do throughout the day truly do matter.
Chelsea Riley is a North Carolina-based toddler mom who shares parenting content on the social media platform. In a clip that’s been viewed more than 30,000 times, Riley reminds parents that their daily routine, “might feel like nothing, but sometimes it’s really everything.”
The video begins with the caption, “I got nothing done today,” but quickly switches to just the word “nothing” as it scrolls through scenes of Riley and her young daughter throughout the course of a day. In the sweet clips, Riley picks up her daughter and snuggles her, helps her brush her teeth, feeds her kids breakfast, helps her toddler get her shoes and socks on, and takes both of her little ones on a walk.
Next up is laundry, yard work, and bath time, followed by more house cleaning, nap time, a workout for mom, a family bike ride, and bedtime. What’s more, we’re sure those aren’t the only “nothings” Riley managed to get completed that day. It’s perfect proof that parents who are home with their children work incredibly hard and take on way more tasks than anyone realizes.
“Moms are literally superheroes that accomplish so much each day,” another mom commented on Riley’s TikTok. “It can feel like ‘nothing,’ but we do the most important things that seem small but matter the most.”
“The hidden labor of motherhood is under-appreciated,” said one commenter. Another added, “Sometimes we need to just take a step back and remember they are the most important part. Everything else can wait.”
Other parents were quick to chime in that, now that their kids have gotten a bit older, they truly do miss these days. “Time goes by fast, and we will not have this in a few years,” said one. “My youngest just started kindergarten,” said another. “The house feels so empty.”
And it’s true. Before today’s “toddler moms” know it, they’ll be dropping their kids off at college, feeling the sense of “momancholy” that comes with knowing all those years of hard work have some to an end. In the meantime, it’s important for all parents to remember that their long days of wiping bottoms and spooning out baby food aren’t for nothing.
As one commenter on Riley’s post said, “Nothing is everything.”
