Do We Need A New Scrum Guide?!

My current car is a Peugeot 508, over ten years old, yet still a great car that I genuinely love. But recently, one of my friends bought a brand-new car and invited me inside to check out the interior and features. My reaction? Wow. A large, high-quality screen with big, responsive buttons to manage everything with a smooth touch; an elegant dashboard with almost no physical knobs (not even a gear stick); dynamic lighting, to name a few. It was a whole new experience I hadn’t expected. That moment got me thinking: maybe it’s time to change my car. Why? Because so much has evolved. If carmakers today still built vehicles like my old Peugeot, hardly anyone would buy them. The reality is that customer expectations have shifted dramatically. I believe the same applies to the Scrum Guide. The latest version is from 2020, nearly six years old. Over the past 6 years, the market has changed enormously, especially with the rise of AI. That’s why I strongly feel we need a new version of the Scrum Guide. Here are my reasons: 1. Progressive evolution is the main sign of survivalLook at nature: Spring brings green and blossoms; Summer changes them to begin producing fruit; Autumn delivers sweet fruit; and Winter rests before the next cycle. Without that rhythm, we’d be stuck in an endless Winter. Life moves forward through continuous evolution.
Let me exaggerate: imagine we keep using the Scrum Guide 2020 until 2040. Would anyone still take it seriously? My personal answer is absolutely not. It’s like Toyota sticking with the 1990 Corolla E100; once a market leader, now that model is nearly irrelevant because customer tastes have transformed over three decades.

It is a paradigm shift. So, the market wants to see AI's impact on their Scrum way of working. For example, by leveraging AI, building the product is no longer the bottleneck. Instead, Scrum Teams' main concern is to recognize what to build that delivers real value. I believe that, more than the Definition of Done (DoD), we need a new concept of Definition of Value (DoV). Scrum Team should have a crystal-clear picture of what value is. If we don’t clearly explain how we embrace AI in the Scrum context, the Scrum Guide risks appearing outdated, or worse, being ignored altogether. 3. Scrum must practice what it preachesScrum itself is founded on empiricism, which means we use the latest facts, evidence, and changes for the next adaptation. So, I believe that Scrum is the first thing that should adhere to this concept. Now we see an enormous paradigm shift in the market with the advent of AI and other changes. If we don’t take the adaptation step, we are not adhering to the fundamental concept of Scrum. 4. User feedback is piling upAs millions of people have been using Scrum worldwide over the past 6 years, I am sure there is a lot of feedback. When should we incorporate their feedback into the Scrum Guide? I strongly believe it is time that we need a Sprint Review for the Scrum Guide product to collect market feedback, update the Product Backlog of the Scrum Guide, and start applying it.Otherwise, our product, the Scrum Guide, will die. Imagine a product that you haven’t added any new features to over the past 6 years. People start forgetting it. Not because it is a bad product, but because of human nature. They see something alive when it smoothly evolves and changes over time.
Think about Samsung’s Galaxy S series cell phones. In recent years, Samsung has released a new model almost every year. Does that mean the previous models were bad? Absolutely not. Yet they continue to develop and launch new models.
Why do they do this?

It is an interesting question worth exploring. Perhaps we should look at how leading, pioneering companies approach product versioning and what we can learn from their strategies. Final wordIn the end, what I see is that the Scrum market needs fresh air to breathe again with ease. Fresh air that embraces all the recent changes in the market.
As the speed of change in the market has become superfast, I believe Scrum is needed more than ever. But we need to update it first.
So, if we release the new version of the Scrum Guide, the market starts updating itself to the new rules of the game. A lot of opportunities emerge. I mean learning, product development process changes, new job opportunities for AI-related assignments, etc., and, on the other hand, Scrum solidifies and keeps its position as the leading inspection and adaptation framework in the market.
