A South Florida man is facing arson charges in connection with a fire at his sister’s ex-husband’s home in Homestead that damaged four vehicles and a residence, records show.
Yonelfy Diaz, 21, was arrested on six counts of arson in the fire that happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of Northwest 9th Street, an arrest report said.
Homestead Police said officers responded and found four vehicles on fire as the blaze extended to the back of a nearby home.
Crews extinguished a fire but two vehicles, a GMC Sierra and a Chevy Tahoe, were left severely damaged.
The owner of those two vehicles said two days earlier, he had been involved in an incident with his ex-wife’s two brothers while dropping off his children, the report said.
During the incident, one of the brothers threw a wrench at the vehicle he was driving, the man said.
The man suspected them of being involved in the fire, which was determined to be arson with a possible accelerant used, the report said.
Surveillance video captured multiple explosions and two males running away from the fire, and one of the males appeared to have his back on fire while fleeing, the report said.
The vehicle they used to flee was identified and found to be registered to their other sister, the report said.
Detectives later met up with Diaz and noticed he had blisters on his hands and both of his eyelashes appeared to be burned the report said.
Diaz also had redness above his right eyelash and on his nose and a large burn injury on his arm, but declined to say how he was injured, the report said.
Diaz was booked into jail and on Wednesday appeared before a judge, who ordered him held without bond.
