Ground stop issued at O'Hare as waves of heavy rain continue

Дата публикации: 01-10-2026 05:52:08

Update: A ground stop has been issued for departures to O’Hare through 1 p.m. due to rain.
October is off to a rainy start in the Chicago area, with another day of wet weather expected Thursday.
Waves of rain are expected to fall throughout the day, impacting both the morning and afternoon rush hour commutes, the NBC 5 Storm Team said. After that, things will dry out.
“Once we get through the rain today, we’ve got a really nice stretch of weather coming our way,” NBC 5 Storm Team 5 Meteorologist Iisha Scott said. “As we get into October, it’s looking pretty good for the next 10 days.”
As of 5:30 a.m., Live Doppler 5 Radar showed rain falling across counties along the lakefront and in northwest Indiana. Showers are expected to remain light for the morning commute, Scott said, with heavier rain moving in by the late morning and early afternoon.
“Midday rainfall will pick up, with heavier bands of rain at times through the evening commute,” Scott said, adding that some isolated thunderstorms possible.
Locally heavy rainfall could occur, the National Weather Service said, with the entire Chicago area under a “moderate” risk of a flood threat, which ranks as level 2 of 4.
Rain from Wednesday’s showers already sparked flooding concerns, with Chicago officials urging residents to delay showers and skip doing laundry in an effort to conserve water and help prevent sewer backups.
Rainy conditions are expected to continue overnight and into early Friday morning for areas to the south of the city and in northwest Indiana. By the daytime hours, things will dry out, Scott said.
Behind the system is a cold front, with high temperatures dipping down into the mid 60s by the weekend. Nights and mornings will be much chillier, with lows in the 40s.
