A collaboration between The Economic Times and the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), High-Performance Leadership & Strategic Decision-Making is designed to equip 30 Founders, CXOs & Business Leaders from around the world with the insights and frameworks to make more deliberate, strategic decisions in complex business environments.
Senior executives routinely make decisions when information is incomplete, priorities compete, and the consequences of a choice may not become visible for years. In such situations, having more information does not necessarily lead to better judgement. Leaders still have to decide which information matters, how it should be interpreted, and which alternatives deserve consideration.
This is where cognitive biases can influence executive decision-making. Biases can affect how leaders frame problems, evaluate evidence and assess potential outcomes, often without their influence being immediately apparent. The challenge becomes particularly relevant for experienced executives, whose previous successes and failures can shape how they interpret new situations.
Experience provides valuable context and pattern recognition, but it can also create assumptions about what is likely to work. A strategy that succeeded in one market, for instance, may influence how a leader approaches a different market even when the underlying circumstances have changed.
As part of the High-Performance Leadership & Strategic Decision-Making programme, a collaboration between The Economic Times and London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), the cognitive biases module examines how systemic biases can influence high-stakes decisions. The module is led by Dr Barbara Fasolo, whose work focuses on behavioural decision-making and judgement.
The focus is not simply on knowing that biases exist. It is on developing greater awareness of how they can affect judgement and creating processes that encourage leaders to examine assumptions, consider alternatives and challenge initial interpretations.
The decision environment matters as well. Executives rarely make strategic decisions in isolation. Choices are shaped by leadership teams, organisational processes and the way information and alternatives are presented. This is where choice architecture becomes relevant, with the programme examining how behavioural insights can be applied to design decision environments that support better choices.
This expands the responsibility of leadership beyond individual judgement. Leaders also need to consider whether the systems around them encourage teams to question assumptions or simply reinforce established views.
Decision-making is also closely connected to negotiation, soft power and cross-cultural leadership. Once a strategic choice has been made, leaders need to communicate it, secure alignment and navigate differing perspectives across teams and stakeholders.
For senior executives, therefore, better decision-making is not about eliminating uncertainty or relying solely on experience and data. It is about developing a more deliberate understanding of how judgement is formed, what may be influencing it and how the surrounding decision environment can shape the choices that follow.
High-Performance Leadership & Strategic Decision-Making brings together 30 Founders, CXOs & Business Leaders from around the world for an intensive learning experience focused on leadership, strategic decision-making and the capabilities required to navigate complex business environments.
