NEW YORK, October 3. /TASS/. Tennessee death-row inmate Christa Pike stated weeks before a botched execution attempt that her greatest fear was complications with drug administration due to the poor condition of her veins, the New York Post (NYP) reported, citing a recording of Pike's prison conversation.

"The concerns I have on our lethal injection method are simply that I do not have good veins," Pike said.

She also said she was afraid the doctor would not be qualified enough to insert a central line. "Tony Carruthers lived out my worst nightmare, detail for detail. And I don't want to go through that," Pike said.

She also expressed fear regarding the effects of the drug used in lethal injections.

"The drug supposedly burns very bad. That sounds scary to me because they used the word 'Drano' [a drain cleaner - TASS] in speaking about this drug, and the thought of suffocating and drowning in my own bodily fluid and blood isn’t very appealing to me," she said.

Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years on Wednesday. However, after two failed attempts to administer the drugs, she was rushed to a hospital. According to the publication, her lawyers reported that she is in critical condition and receiving life-sustaining medical care.

In May, Tennessee authorities postponed the execution of 57-year-old Tony Carruthers for a year after medical staff spent an hour unable to locate a vein for the lethal injection. The condemned man's lawyers petitioned the court to halt the execution, arguing that the attempts to access a vein constituted "cruel and unusual punishment."
