A Las Vegas police officer “negligently discharged his firearm” Friday afternoon while responding to a stolen vehicle call in the west valley, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

No one was struck by the gunfire, police said.

The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m., said Metro Capt. Adam Seely in a briefing Friday afternoon.

The department received reports of a stolen vehicle in the 9500 block of West Charleston Boulevard, near South Hualapai Way. An officer found the vehicle just to the northeast in the 8200 block of Silver Sky Drive, off Westcliff Drive east of North Durango Drive.

The officer, whom the department has not identified, approached the vehicle, “drew his firearm,” and ordered the suspect to get out, Seely said. Instead, the suspect began to drive away when the officer fired one round.

The suspect was not hit and drove away, ramming two Metro patrol vehicles, Seely said. Officers later arrested the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with a minor injury.

“Because this was not an officer-involved shooting, but a negligent discharge, the LVMPD Internal Affairs Bureau responded and is now leading the investigation,” Seely said.

Seely said an officer-involved shooting involves an officer intentionally firing a weapon, while a negligent discharge involves an accidental firing. He declined to provide additional details.

Under Metro policy, the department typically releases the identity of an officer involved in a police shooting after 48 hours. Later, the officials hold a news conference during which they present body-camera footage and additional details from the shooting.

A Metro spokesperson said the department would not release the officer’s name or provide an additional briefing because the case “is now an Internal Affairs investigation and, per NRS, those are not shared.”
