BEIJING, October 3. /TASS/. Russia’s Daniil Medvedev defeated Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament in Beijing.

Medvedev, the tournament’s third seed, prevailed 6-4, 6-3 over the unseeded Struff. In the quarterfinals, Medvedev will face the winner of the match between Argentina’s unseeded Francisco Cerundolo and eighth-seeded Czech player Jakub Mensik.

Medvedev, 30, is ranked sixth in the ATP rankings and has won 24 ATP singles titles. He spent 16 weeks as world No. 1 in 2022. In 2021, he won both the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup as a member of the Russian national team. Medvedev has reached six Grand Slam finals, winning one title - the 2021 US Open. The previous year, he also won the ATP Finals.

Struff, 36, is ranked 59th in the world and has one ATP singles title to his name. This season, he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, the best Grand Slam result of his career.

The Beijing tournament is an ATP 500 event played on hard courts. The competition will conclude on October 6, with a total prize pool of $4 million. The defending champion is world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy, who is sitting out this year’s tournament due to injury.
