YouTube overhauls its app-to-TV experience, shared Wi-Fi network no longer required

Casting from YouTube to your television has been a thing since, well, since Google first rolled out its Cast protocol well over a decade ago, and though the site’s default TV interface is pretty good these days, casting remains the preference of Chromecast veterans everywhere. If you count yourself among that crowd, good news: Google is overhauling how the app-to-TV experience works with YouTube.

As described in an announcement post on the YouTube support forums, Google is rolling out some big changes to how YouTube on your smartphone interacts with your television. The company is describing your device as a “companion” now, even ditching the classic Cast icon for something a little more generic. It’s a change that, based on Reddit threads, seemingly entered testing earlier in 2026, and is now ready for a full rollout.

It’s not just a new way to describe pairing your devices, though. With this refresh, casting videos from your phone to a television now sounds like it has a whole lot less friction, thanks in part to a shift on completely relying on account-based management. These changes include:

  • No longer requiring both devices to be on a shared Wi-Fi network to cast. Instead, users will need to be signed in on the same account on both devices.
  • The ability to like videos, leave comments, and subscribe to channels while the video plays in the background.
  • The option to consume YouTube Shorts content on your phone while a different, full-length video plays on your television.
  • A built-in “Play on different device” option found within the menu button on every video listed in your homepage feed.

There are, of course, some caveats to these upgrades, and it primarily revolves around the shift to forcing account-based pairing between devices. While this should work wonders for private viewing sessions — i.e., casting a video from your own phone to your own television to watch either independently or with someone else in the room — it’s unclear if this completely removes the ability to cast over Wi-Fi, something that’s genuinely useful in larger gatherings with multiple participants. That’s a pretty common use case for watching YouTube on a television, so I’m hoping generic Cast support continues to exist in this format. Otherwise, this feels like a particularly anti-social change from Google.

Generally, though, these are all steps in the right direction, taking a lot of the existing Cast elements and simply streamlining them for a more modern second-screen experience. That “Play on different device” option, for example, appears to be pretty similar to the current casting menu, but won’t require you to begin playing a video on your phone prior to beaming it to your TV. Personally, browsing Shorts while watching a full-length video on your television sounds pretty overwhelming to me, but it’s certainly Google meeting modern viewers where they’re already at.

Today’s announcement did not include a specific rollout window, but it does sound like it’ll be coming to a mobile device near you very, very soon.
