Stirring some ensorcelled sugar into a decadent mug of tea, savoring a cookie that boasts a spooky shape or the hues of autumn, and basking in a moment to pause and enjoy all things October?
Such serene and celebratory adventures don’t require a deep knowledge of witchcraft, though witches and all Halloween-loving revelers are invited to alight at a local afternoon tea this month, one that has the festive feel of this most frightful and fun stretch.
Unhand your broom, at least for a moment, and connect with a flavorful brew or two at a few Southern California tearooms, a downtown tea lounge, and a grand Pasadena hotel.
The Witching Hour Afternoon Tea has just emerged from the fog at Chado Tea Room, with a lovely array of nibbles and libations in tow.
The price? It’s $78, whether you are human, a vampire, or a being from beyond. Simply fly to your closest Chado in Pasadena, DTLA, Hollywood, or Torrance, as all locations are participating (but do make your reservation ahead of time).
The centerpiece? It’s a tiered stand holding the not-so-ghoulish goodies — it sports the traditional three tiers, indeed — and an assortment of themed teas to choose from, including Black Magic and Pumpkin Spice Chai.
Complementing the cup-based warmth are whimsical eats: Spellbound butter cookies, witch’s spell cupcakes, and finger sandwiches are among the culinary offerings.
The October tea scene is shimmering all around: Lilly Rose at The Wayfarer Downtown is the velvet-y nook for a Spooky Tea.
Presented in a plush and hidden-away space at the historic hotel, the afternoon tea features Dammann teas and a bevy of esoteric eats, including pan de muerto and pumpkin sandwich cookies. Miniature spinach quiches and cucumber sandwiches are also on the menu.
The limited-time Spooky Tea is $55; book your spot on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday through Nov. 1.
Oh yes: There’s also a “house specialty aperitif” on the lovely line-up, a drink that is available for an additional $14. The creatively crafted sips, which boast prosecco and other spirited ingredients, may be purchased and enjoyed by guests 21 and older.
And if you say “abracadabra” and find yourself at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena in the coming days, you’ll be in a celebratory spot filled with tea, scones, and illusions.
The hotel’s Afternoon Magic Tea is summoning the feel of October through a clutch of cute desserts and tasty teas. And when your sip-and-snack session nears its conclusion? There shall be a magic show, all to enhance the October atmosphere.
“Costumes are encouraged,” is the word from the Langham. The dates? Wave your wand over your calendar, then make your reservation on Oct. 24 or 25. The price is $109 for an adult, $79 for youngsters under the age of 12; tax and tip are additional.
