Many celebrity couples try to keep the messy details of their breakups under wraps, but sometimes the tea is just too good to stay secret — and occasionally, the celebs themselves are the ones spilling it.
Here are 18 absolutely wild reasons celebrity couples split:
1.
In 1991, Julia Roberts was set to marry her Flatliners costar, Kiefer Sutherland. However, on the day of the wedding, Kiefer was spotted moving out of their house, while Julia was out on a lunch date with his friend, Jason Patric. Shortly after, Julia and Jason jetted off to Dublin! Kiefer later told Rolling Stone, "We were friends, and I'm surprised that I never got a call from him saying I've fallen in love with da-da-da. Instead, I found out from a stranger." She and Jason dated for about a year.
Julia clarified the timeline of her split from Kiefer, telling Rolling Stone, "The only thing I really have no tolerance for is ignorance. People aren't even consistent. I've read 'days before,' 'hours before,' 'minutes before.' And the fact is, it doesn't matter how many times you say it — he wasn't waiting at the altar, it wasn't the day before, somebody else didn't tell him, he didn't see it on TV — people don't want to know."
2.
Sophie Turner married Joe Jonas in 2019, but after a major argument on his birthday, they split in 2023. He allegedly filed for divorce without her knowledge, and she supposedly found out in the press! The court documents said, "The breakdown of the parties' marriage happened very suddenly. The parties had an argument on August 15, 2023. On or about September 1, 2023, the Father filed a divorce case against the Mother in Florida. On or about September 5, 2023, the Mother found out through the media that the Father had filed for divorce."
But it gets wilder! According to sources who spoke to TMZ, Joe allegedly decided to divorce Sophie after catching her on the Ring camera, "saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over." Another source, who spoke to US Weekly, alleged that he caught her speaking poorly of him to a friend, adding, "It wasn't anything more than that, but that was the final straw."
3.
One Tree Hill costars Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Lenz's budding romance was allegedly nipped in the bud because she was in a cult — and the other cult members didn't like him! Speaking onstage at a concert in 2024, he reportedly said, "I started writing [songs] with her and hanging with her, and then, you know, we really fell for each other. We started to catch feelings for real, and we were hanging out all the time. ... I started to get the vibe that she was in a cult, and I was like, 'Um, are you in a cult or like…?' We had so many beautiful, deep conversations about religion and stuff, and every once in a while, I'd just get cult vibes, you know?"
However, he was so "into her" that he decided to overlook the cult thing. He continued, "I was like, 'Dude, I'm down with cults. I don't care about that shit. Yeah, that's no big deal. Dude, tons of girls are with cults.'" She told him that the cult needed to "suss him out," and he "was like, 'Oh, OK! Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. I've been through this before.'" He continued, "They came out to the show, and they sussed me out. And they were like, 'Yeah, he's not the vibe.' She was like, 'Yeah, the cult said no.' And I was like, 'Oh, OK, so, huh, all right.' Normally you can [ask] a girl, 'Is there something I can do?' But if the cult says no, you're fucked, you know what I'm saying? And I'd never been broken up with by a cult before. That was the first time, actually, so I really was just out of options."
4.
Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds dated for nearly two years before getting married. On New Year's Day 2008, they threw a small sunset wedding on a private island off of Bora Bora. However, their marriage barely lasted two weeks! In a joint statement to Access, they said, "After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony, as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship, and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends."
What's more, they weren't even legally married! According to HuffPost, the couple allegedly broke up right before signing the paperwork because Eddie wanted his mother to go on the honeymoon. A friend of Tracey said, "That was kind of the last straw. She was happy to sign a prenup — she has her own money. She was very accommodating. But then it was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Eddie became very controlling, and they got into a huge fight. He started screaming at her and grabbed her. She was scared. She was even willing to change her name to Tracey Murphy, and all the wedding invites and place cards had her labeled as such."
5.
Laura Dern met Billy Bob Thornton in 1997, and within two years, they were engaged. However, while she was away from home shooting a new movie, he grew closer to his Pushing Tin costar Angelina Jolie. Rather than calling Laura to tell her he met someone else, he seemingly ghosted her. But that's not even the worst part — he actually married Angelina before Laura returned!
In 2000, Laura told Talk magazine, "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I've never heard from him again. It's like a sudden death. For no one has there been any closure or clarity."
6.
Bobby Brown and Kim Ward began dating when they were just 11 and 12. She was with him through his New Edition days, his split from the band, and the start of his solo career. Kim grounded him, but his family reportedly tried to break them up because of the influence she had over him. Their relationship was on and off. He welcomed a child, Landon, with someone else in 1986, but three years later, Kim gave birth to her and Bobby's first child together, La'Princia. Another major moment happened in Bobby's life in 1989 — he met Whitney Houston at her 26th birthday party. Bobby's entanglement with both women would ultimately end when he was ready to get married.
He began an on-and-off relationship with Whitney. However, Kim was still around. She even lived in his mansion with their daughter. In 1991, she became pregnant with their second child, Bobby Jr. However, that September, Bobby and Whitney got engaged, officially ending his relationship with Kim. She told Boston magazine, "I feel like the only thing Whitney had over me was a pretty smile; she had that nice set of teeth. I was a little bit younger then. ... [I wasn't] thinking about her money, her power, I didn't know none of that. I wasn't thinking about her credibility. ... Why did he get married? The pressure. It probably was the pressure from his family and from his friends. I mean, she was so big then."
7.
Mario Lopez and model/former Miss USA Ali Landry were briefly married in 2004. Only two weeks after they tied the knot in Mexico, Ali ended things amid rumors that he had cheated on her, and they got an annulment. On The Wendy Williams Show, she said that "he swore that it was not true," but she had a gut feeling he was lying. She went through with the wedding anyway because her family had already booked their tickets to Mexico. She said, "I really should have put the brakes on it at that point, but I was afraid." So, she later let her friend tap his phone.
Seven years after the breakup, Mario publicly admitted to cheating on Ali. He told Howard Stern that he "messed around" with another woman during his bachelor party in Mexico. He said, "I had no business of being in that position... It was spring break…everybody was hanging out. That was a situation where I was not mature and man enough." When his cousins surprised him with a change of plans from a fishing trip in Cabo to a "whirlwind tour" of the country, he didn't tell Ali. He was caught on camera with the other woman, and Ali confronted him after her sister showed her the picture.
8.
The Blind Side actor Quinton Aaron married Margarita DeLeon at the end of 2024. Then, in January 2026, he woke up in the middle of the night and realized he was paralyzed from the waist down. He was rushed to the hospital and slipped into a coma that night. A few days later, he regained consciousness, but he then went into cardiac arrest. After multiple resuscitations, he spent a month intubated. According to doctors, he'd had a pulmonary embolism and a spinal stroke. At some point during his hospital stay, his family delivered a shocking discovery — Margarita had allegedly still been legally married to her former husband all along!
She was blocked from making medical decisions for him. Amidst reports that Quinton's family "banned" her from his hospital room, Margarita told Us Weekly, "We are spiritually married. We are tied as one. ... I am separated from my ex, and we are both working on this process to make sure a divorce gets finalized so we both can move on with our lives. I have watched Quinton in the hospital for seven days. I prayed. I watched this man go through trials and tribulations."
By August, Quinton was recovering at a rehab facility and feeling "very optimistic" that he'll regain the ability to walk. But as for Margarita, he hasn't spoken to her since his stroke. He told Us Weekly, "It's definitely been a challenge dealing with that and the recovery. [Earlier on], a lot of things aggravated me easily, which spiked my blood pressure. When I was intubated, I was dealing with depression and anger and all these different emotions. So I got to this point where I had to completely shut all of that out. In order for me to move forward, I needed to completely remove her from my life. So that's what I did."
9.
Pamela Anderson married Kid Rock in 2006, but she dodged the bullet of the century when they divorced a year later. The reason she left? His explosive reaction to her appearance in the Borat movie! In her memoir Love, Pamela, she wrote, "I had rented a small house on Escondido Beach, but it was tiny for the five of us, so Bob [Ritchie, Kid Rock's real name] found us a more suitable home on Point Dume and bought it. We were about to move in, until the premiere of Borat. The screening at Ron and Kelly Meyer's house didn't go well."
She continued, "Lots of important industry people were there — Steven Spielberg, Rick Rubin, Laird Hamilton, and his wife, Gabby Reece. I didn't tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him. I forgot about the part in the film that referenced the 'sex tape.' Bob stormed out, calling me a whore and worse. He was embarrassed, and his reaction was not thought through. Laird yelled, 'Don't get mad at Superwoman when she busts out her cape!' After I chased Bob to his car, he peeled out, leaving me there alone. I turned back and apologized, then asked if anyone could give me a ride home. When I walked in, Bob was smashing a photo on the wall. He said he was sick of waking up to a picture of me and David LaChapelle every day. But it wasn't me and David — it was Marilyn Monroe and Bert Stern. We broke up. I didn't stay in touch with Bob."
10.
Shania Twain and record producer Mutt Lange were married from 1993 to 2010. They separated in 2008 amidst his affair with her close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud! Marie-Anne had also been the manager of the couple's Swiss château since the '90s.
In her 2011 OWN show Why Not? With Shania Twain, the singer said, "I was definitely shocked. Mutt was my partner in every sense. It really hurt. First, I found out my marriage was over. The next day, I found out about the affair. My own friend, who I had confided in, had an affair with my husband. I still can't get my head around that. I really lost my sense of trust, compassion...honesty, forget that. That's all gone. That's dead. I crashed down into what I consider an emotional mess."
In an interesting twist of fate, Shania married Marie-Anne's ex, Frédéric Thiébaud, in 2011. As of 2023, Mutt and Marie-Anne were still together.
11.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck started dating and got engaged (for the first time) in 2002, but they postponed the wedding a year later because of the intense media attention. In a joint statement in 2003, they told People, "Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date. When we found ourselves seriously contemplating hiring three separate 'decoy brides' at three different locations, we realized that something was awry. We began to feel that the spirit of what should have been the happiest day of our lives could be compromised. We felt what should have been a joyful and sacred day could be spoiled for us, our families, and our friends."
A few months later, in early 2004, they broke up. Ben told The Howard Stern Show, "I would say [media attention] was about 50 percent [of what destroyed our relationship]. The idea that people hate you and they hate you together and that being together is poison and ugly and toxic and the thing none of us want to be part of. And, 'Who the fuck would want to have them to dinner?' And, 'What the fuck are they doing together?'"
Nearly 20 years later, they gave their relationship another shot, getting married in 2022. However, they ultimately weren't meant to be. Jennifer filed for divorce in 2024, and it was finalized a year later. She told CBS Sunday Mornings, "Honestly, I have to say it was the best thing that ever happened to me because it changed me. It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow [and] become more self-aware. I'm a different person now than I was last year."
12.
Alfie costars Jude Law and Sienna Miller started dating in 2003 and got engaged a year later. However, in 2005, his affair with Daisy Wright — his kids' nanny — became public. Daisy published her diary pages about the affair. She claimed that, after attending a concert with Jude and one of his kids, she and the actor drank wine and talked for a long time. After she said goodnight, he kissed her, which stretched into 10 minutes of kissing. She wrote, "The next thing I know, we are dragging each other upstairs to his bedroom, kissing and then, in the bedroom, ripping off each other's clothes. We threw ourselves onto the giant bed and ripped off our remaining clothes. ... It was mind-blowing rampant sex."
Sienna performed in As You Like It on the West End seven times a week while her then-fiancé's cheating scandal played out across the tabloids. In 2020, she told the Daily Beast, "That was one of the most challenging moments I hope I'll ever have to experience. Because with that level of public heartbreak, to have to get out of a bed let alone stand in front of 800 people every night, it's just the last thing you want to do. It was really hard. And the other thing was, it was at the height of all that paparazzi madness, and in London, where there was an epidemic of bad behavior. They knew where I would be every night."
Jude and Sienna broke up at the time, but they later reconciled. However, they called it quits for good in 2011. In 2014, she told Esquire UK, "I had to [reconcile with him because the relationship was] a huge part of my life and his life, and it ended in a way that was awful. When something ends in a way like that, it's important if you can, in a way, go back and revisit it and either shut that door or create a new room. So it was a very healthy, cathartic experience."
13.
Iggy Azalea and Nick Young got engaged in 2015. But the following year, his Lakers teammate D'Angelo Russell posted a Snapchat video of his teammate Nick admitting to cheating on his fiancé. D'Angelo reportedly thought he could upload the video as a prank, then quickly delete it, and didn't realize others would see it or save it. However, the video leaked to the public, where plenty of people — including Iggy — saw it.
She tweeted, "Hmmm I see D'Angelo Russell is trending... I actually liked his film. Thanks bro." In a press conference, D'Angelo said, "I feel as sick as possible. Been asked 110 times, and my answer and feeling stay same...I can't really show my face anywhere without people hating me right now. I don't know. I try to handle it the right way and remember why I'm here, which is to play basketball." He also said that he apologized to Nick and regretted putting his personal life "in jeopardy."
While the video definitely caused problems for the couple, it wasn't the final nail in the coffin. A few months later, Iggy called off the engagement after she checked the security cameras and allegedly caught Nick bringing other women into their house.
14.
In 1992, Halle Berry proposed to former MLB player David Justice five months into their relationship. They got married on New Year's Day but divorced in 1997. Basically, it boiled down to the fact that THE Halle Berry didn't want to be a "traditional" wife.
Nearly three decades later, David told the podcast All the Smoke, "I was young and had only been in, honestly, one real relationship before her. My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast. So, I'm looking at my mom — and I'm a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I'm thinking a wife, at that time, should cook, clean, you know? Then I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' At that time, as a young guy — she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem, like, motherly, and then we start having issues."
David unsurprisingly faced a lot of backlash for his comments. Halle seemingly responded in the most iconic way possible, sharing a picture of herself and her partner, Van Hunt, relaxing in bed together, unbothered and effortlessly beautiful. She captioned it, "Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering."
15.
Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson were married from 1988 to 1994. Appearing on Good Morning America: Evening Edition in 1993, he reportedly admitted to cheating on her, but he added, "I caught her cheating on me. And so I just…I made a decision to call it off." But, as if they were living in a soap opera, Burt asked Loni to "take a sodium pentothal test" — which has reportedly been used as a "truth serum" — to reveal who was the first to be unfaithful. He said, "If she wins, I will give her everything I own, including my ranch, my house, a lot of Western art she doesn't want, and her $13 million she was asking for. If I win, I get Quinton [their son]. That's all I want."
16.
In 2024, Karina from the girl group Aespa confirmed her relationship with actor/model Lee Jae-wook. Some fans were reportedly so outraged that Karina was in a relationship that they had a truck with an electronic billboard bearing the following message drive by her agency's HQ: "Do you not get enough love from your fans? Why did you choose to betray your fans? Please apologize directly. Otherwise, you'll see declining album sales and empty concert seats." On Instagram, she posted a handwritten apology, writing, "I know very well how disappointed [my fans] who have supported me are and how upset you're thinking about the memories we shared together. I want to make up for my hurt fans from now on. I have always been sincere to you, and still each and every one of you are truly precious to me."
A mere five weeks later, the couple publicly announced their breakup. In a statement, Jae-wook's agency said that the couple broke up to focus on their careers, "leaving them as colleagues who support each other."
17.
In 2023, Vanderpump Rules costars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix's nine-year relationship came crashing down after she allegedly found a sexual video of Tom and their fellow costar, Raquel Leviss, on his phone during his concert. She also read their texts. At the time, a source told People, "This [affair] has been going on for upwards of six months — all the while, Tom was sleeping next to Ariana in bed. She was completely blindsided by this; devastated doesn't even scratch the surface of how she feels." The scandal blew up into a massive pop culture moment dubbed "Scandoval."
Initially, Tom responded to the backlash by asking fans not to boycott the restaurant he co-owns, as his three partners and employees "did nothing wrong." Then, a few days later, he released a full apology on Instagram, writing, "I want to first and foremost apologize to everyone I've hurt through this process. Most of all, I want to apologize to Ariana. I made mistakes, I was selfish, and made reckless decisions that hurt somebody I love. No one deserves to feel that pain so traumatically and publicly."
At the Season 10 reunion, Tom admitted that he was "still in love" with Raquel. Ariana told him, "Honestly, that's the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. This is a joke."
18.
And finally, in 1957, Old Hollywood icons Sammy Davis Jr. and Kim Novak's relationship ended after her studio head allegedly put a mob hit on Sammy because he didn't want his star dating a Black man. For context, interracial marriages were legalized in California in 1948, but they weren't legalized at the federal level until 1967.
Sammy and Kim's romance began as a blind item from a gossip columnist, and he called her to apologize for the tension the rumor had caused with Columbia Pictures. However, declaring that the studio didn't own her, Kim invited him over for dinner. In his autobiography, Sammy, he wrote, "She hadn't thought about me anymore than I had thought about her — until it was forbidden. Then we became conspirators, drawn together by the single thing we had in common: defiance."
News of their relationship reached Columbia head Harry Cohn, who reportedly had such strong ties with the Chicago mafia that he and mobster Johnny Roselli had matching friendship rings. So, Harry allegedly used his mob connections to put a hit out on Sammy. Mickey Cohen, the boss of the Cohen crime family in LA, passed the message on to Sammy's dad, Smithsonian magazine reported. They reportedly "said they would break both of his legs, put out his other eye, and bury him in a hole if he didn't marry a Black woman right away," leaving Sammy "scared as hell."
