A Nanaimo man says it’s a miracle that he’s alive following a dramatic crash in Nanaimo.
The crash, which was captured on video, happened at one of the city’s busiest intersections when his motorcycle collided with an SUV.
It happened at the intersection of the Island Highway and Departure Bay Road Aug. 30.

Jai Robinson, on his motorcycle, had just disembarked from a BC Ferry at Departure Bay and, after turning onto the Island Highway, said he was worried about how closely he was being followed.
“Getting tailgated myself. My concern was that when you’re slowing down coming to a stop, my fear is getting rear-ended and then getting sandwiched in between the vehicles,” said Robinson.
Robinson said he felt the safest maneuver was to get away from traffic. He passed on the right shoulder, thinking Departure Bay Road was clear.
“My light was green for a full three seconds. I mean, there’s video of it, so that person should not have been in the intersection because you can clearly see the vehicles that were ahead of me were actually continuing through the intersection and had to stop,” said Robinson.
The RCMP are investigating and ICBC will have to determine who’s at fault but the Motor Vehicle Act forbids going onto a shoulder to pass on the right. Regardless Robinson says it’s incredible he survived.
“It’s unexplainable because I can’t help but say it’s divine intervention by God because I usually wear a full helmet, but this instant I wore a beanie and no head trauma, no bruising to the brain, not even a chipped tooth, so absolutely incredible,” said Robinson.
But Robinson, who’s still in hospital, did sustain a broken pelvis in five places, two broken wrists and he now has metal screws and plates after four surgeries.
He’s expecting a fifth surgery, but the 50-year-old, father of two and Nanaimo resident is optimistic that not only will he fully recover, but the crash has given him a new lease on life.
“I knew at that moment that this was something that was new that was going to happen in my life as far as the trajectory of how my life is going to be after this.”
Robinson is grateful for family, friends and the health care system that’s supported him since the crash and despite a lengthy recovery ahead he’s excited about what the future holds.
Jai Robinson said he believes it was divine intervention he survived. He spoke to CHEK News from his Victoria hospital bed.READ ALSO: Motorcycles slam into SUV near Nanaimo’s Long Lake
