The latest tinnitus news, research and support from the American Tinnitus Association
Volume 26: August 26, 2026
Every week, ATA hears from people who want to know if a product found online promising to cure tinnitus or substantially reduce the sound is legitimate. That inquiry represents hope and healthy skepticism. It’s also a sign of how sophisticated online content has become at distorting and undermining what the scientific evidence says.
In this issue we’re sharing a story about a patient who turned to healing crystals for tinnitus relief and how a provider worked with him to restore his quality of life. We also share red flags to help you avoid questionable products online and where to report them. We also showcase a patient story and conference about misophonia, a poorly understood sound hypersensitivity disorder that can co-occur with tinnitus.
When Peter showed up to his tinnitus consultation with an array of crystals, each one supposedly tuned to heal a different part of his tinnitus, Stelios Dokianakis, AuD, could have been dismissive but he chose to listen. His essay on what happened next, and what actually helped, is a candid look at why hope and evidence aren’t always the same thing.
Tinnitus has no single cause, which is what much of online product marketing aimed at people with tinnitus ignores. Audiologist and tinnitus researcher Richard Tyler, PhD, recently spoke with a support group about how deceptive claims take root online, and why a product promising a cure for tinnitus should raise doubt rather than hope.
Some of the clearest warning signs to watch for include:
Founded in 2013, the Misophonia Association is dedicated to helping patients, educating providers, and supporting research to better understand the condition. If you’re someone living with or affected by misophonia, or a provider seeking to understand how to help patients, consider joining the Misophonia Association’s annual conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 22 to 24.The event opens with a casual evening gathering, followed by two full days of sessions with nearly 20 speakers, designed for adults and youth with misophonia, family members, and professionals who support them. Programming spans coping strategies, current treatment approaches, and exploring how misophonia shows up differently across age groups.

More than 50 million individuals in the United States, and hundreds of millions of people worldwide, live with tinnitus. The scope of that reality demands our attention. The promise of the science funded last year demands hope. And the dedication of every support group leader, donor, researcher, and patient who connects with ATA demands our gratitude. Together, we are building a community strong enough, connected enough, and determined enough to transform care and advance the search for cures.
Every donation helps us fund groundbreaking research, connect patients with evidence-based resources, and advocate for better care and coverage. Every gift, no matter the size, moves us closer to that goal.
