AI agents are already moving money on platforms like Coinbase, and Cathie Wood wants investors paying close attention to where it all goes. Before you hand over account access, four controls separate a trustworthy agent from a financial liability.
Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, offered investors a phrase to consider at Robinhood (NASDAQ:HOOD | HOOD Price Prediction)’s Summit in Houston. “We’re probably going to be talking more and more about ‘follow the agents,'” Wood said, according to CoinDesk. The comment raises a critical question: what happens when software gets access to your money?
What “Follow the Agents” Would Mean for Your AccountsAn AI agent is software that acts on your behalf: booking travel, buying goods, moving cash, or placing trades once you grant permission. “Follow the agents” means tracking where that software sends money, much like investors track consumer spending or fund flows.
The phrase lines up with Wood’s broader AI view. On September 25, 2026, she weighed in. She said AI is “going to leverage human beings, leverage them from a productivity point of view.” An agent managing your money is the most direct version of that leverage.
Spending Caps and Kill Switches Come FirstJoseph Chalom, co-CEO of SharpLink (NASDAQ:SBET) and former head of digital assets at BlackRock (NYSE:BLK), names four critical controls:
“A world full of intelligent agents means nothing if a handful of companies decide where your money can go,” Chalom wrote in the final installment of a three-part series on agentic finance. This was reported by CoinDesk.
Consumer protection systems strain under the load. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported complaints reached more than 5.8 million in 2025, linked in part to AI agents that “empower bad actors to flood the system with duplicative and spurious submissions.”
Agents Are Already Trading on CoinbaseBrian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), said on X that “Grok is the leading client for agentic traders on Coinbase currently,” according to CoinDesk, but provided no volume figures. On October 6, Elon Musk posted that “Grok @Bot can be your personal chief financial officer!” as he promoted the bot connected to bank and brokerage accounts.
Payment Rails Fight Is Still OpenStripe, Visa (NYSE:V), Google and OpenAI are building agent payment systems. Visa’s Intelligent Commerce Connect, announced April 8, 2026, offers “secure payment initiation, tokenization, spend controls, and authentication,” and allows agents to pay with non-Visa cards. Stablecoins and blockchains present themselves as the open alternative to concentrated platforms, leaving the contest undecided.
Reality Check Before You Hand Over the KeysAgent spending remains an unreliable demand signal. Most agent activity today is developer-directed, with agents rarely choosing where money goes independently, so for now following the agents mostly means following the programmers who build them.
Platforms That Ship These Controls First Have the EdgePlatforms offering caps, cancellation, full records and portability by default will likely capture consumer money, so watch two signals: Will Coinbase, Robinhood or xAI publish agent-driven trading volume? Do those numbers come with clear spending limits and cancellation tools? Volume without controls demands for trust without earning it.
