Wizz App, the social discovery app for young people, today (7th October, 2026) released findings from its Back-to-School Survey of 12,402 U.S. college students aged 18 to 24. The research examines how Gen Z connects with new people during their first year of college, and the role social apps play in turning first contact into real connection.

The findings show:
● 52% of students used a social app to meet people on campus
● 72% said connecting with someone online or through an app, before or instead of a cold in-person introduction, has led to a real, close connection, including 34% who said it worked better than approaching someone in person
● 85% said the app gave them more confidence (48% significantly, 37% somewhat)
● 60% said shyness or nerves stopped them from introducing themselves to someone during their first week, and 63% of those held back said they didn't know how to start the conversation
● 64% had only vague ideas about making connections on campus

For brands and marketers looking to reach Gen Z, the data points to the first weeks of college as a high-intent moment: students actively want to connect, and many turn to apps as a low- pressure starting point. Messaging and interest-based discovery give younger adults an easier way to open a conversation, which then carries into campus life.

Wizz App is testing that path offline. In September, the company ran a pilot campus activation at Rutgers University, combining student ambassador content from Rutgers' film department, a Spin and Sip Matcha icebreaker event, and seating takeovers inside around 50 university buses. The pilot informs Wizz App's wider college program.

Commenting on the findings, Alexandra Ryabova, COO, Wizz App, said: 'Gen Z plans their social life on their phones, and the first message is often where a connection begins. Our survey shows students want that first step to feel easy and low-pressure. Pairing the app with on- campus moments like Rutgers lets us meet young people where they already are, online and in
real life."

Methodology
The Wizz Back-to-School Survey was conducted in August 2026 among 12,402 U.S. college students aged 18 to 24. Full results are available on request at press@wizzapp.com.
