A recent NASA study found planets near a red dwarf star called Wolf 359. They discovered that it may face dangerous space weather from a strong UV radiation. This star is about 7.8 light years away from Earth and has a mass of about one-tenth of the sun. Scientist used a Chandra x-ray observatory to study how the radiation can affect the planets around the star. They came to the conclusion that only the planets that are the farthest away from the star may still be able to support life since they have a thick atmosphere and greenhouse gases. Reading this article made me realize that even nearby stars can create such harsh environments.
